Coste Joins the Mets

Posted by Pat Gallen, Mon, November 30, 2009 06:48 PM

Our old friend Chris Coste is joining the rivals to the north.  Coste has reportedly signed a one-year deal according to Jeff Kolpak of the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead in North Dakota.

The report says that the Mets have given him a spot on the 40-man roster, but have made no guarantees about being on the opening day 25-man list.

Have to say, this one stings a bit.  Coste was one of those guys you’ll always admire as a Phillies fan, but going to the Mets is a tough pill to swallow.  Anyway, best of luck to Coste next season.

  1. Ed R. Says:

    Good for Coste I guess.

On a positive note, Chip Caray got axed by TBS. Might have to do with him being one of the worst announcers of all time.

  2. Greg V. Says:

    From Leslie Guidel’s Twitter:

Coste signed 1yr split contract with Mets. Said Mets last team he ever thought he’d play for. That he’ll “always consider myself a Phillie”

  3. Greg V. Says:

My personal view: I’ve met a small handful of ballplayers in my day during autograph sessions and what not. When Coste was promoting his book, he did a signing at a local Barnes and Noble and I stopped by and I thought he was the nicest and most outgoing ballplayer I’ve come across. Total class act. True, he was nothing amazing but he was always a worker and always fought hard to get to the majors and stay there. I’m glad he got a job and an opportunity to play in the bigs again. He deserves it. Yes, it’s the dreaded Mets and I have never cheered for a Met but I’m willing to make an exception for Coste.

  4. rusty stab Says:

All professional athletes could learn something in humility and class from Chris Coste. I wish him well.

  5. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Chris Coste is welcome to help my Amazins out.Great to see a guy come to us that has the heart of a champion, good people…..and of course a ballplayer who isn’t your typical Minaya type signing,a non-hispanic player.Glad to see most guys applaudimg the move.BTW Thanxgiving was stuffing.Next week……Winter Meetings, the real fun begins

  6. Dan S Says:

Phillies fans can’t be mad at at Coste. He always seemed like the kind of guy who loves to play the game and I’m sure he was going to go any team that would offer him a contract.

  7. Groty Says:

    I feel violated.

  8. Pizza Bagel Says:

    Sorry Groty, I couldn’t resist the temptation…

  9. Amazinsux Says:

This news leaves me feeling sick. Just the thought of seeing a class guy like Coste in that disgusting Muts uniform makes me cringe. I do however, wish Chris the best.

  10. Brooks Says:

Chris got what every player coming up in the bigs ever desires – a WS ring.
He remains a hard worker and a class guy but now he is with the enemy and being an X-Phil, I fully expect him to sting us whenever he plays against us
    = (

    Good luck Chris!

  11. Maverick Says:

wtf… someone better throw batteries at him…

  12. Maverick Says:

actually – strike that last comment. I think he is a true Phillie..
The guy batted .204 last year.. with that average he can’t help the phils he can only hurt them by being on the roster…

so whats the next best thing? Play for the Mets and bring that 204 avg to the plate vs philly pitching!

    Chris Coste is the man

  13. Don M Says:

I’ll cheer for him when we play the Mets

  14. Manny Says:

I’ll cheer for him right before he steps to the plate… once he’s ready to swing, I’ll give him hell.

  15. Brooks Says:

Amazingsux – there is only one other Mut that I respect and would not mind seeing in the pinstripes – David Wright.

  16. Chuck Says:

Class guy…..he’s just signing where he can….at this point in his career…..I can’t blame him and…..yes…..I’ll cheer for him as well.

  17. GREENINIL Says:

Stung when Todd Pratt went to the Muts too. I wish Coste well.

  18. GREENINIL Says:

And now the Phils sign the Mets backup catcher who had about the same average as Coste last year!

  19. NEPA Says:

Why did we get rid of Coste in the first place. So we could sign another catcher of equal quality?
Sorry I cant cheer for any Met no matter what!

  20. Philliesman Says:

No matter what I will continue to cheer for Chris Coste. But if he hits 2 homeruns in one game with 5 rbis I am going to be pissed.

  21. Jeff Says:

haha, Mets fans are PISSED at his comments. I will root for him because he’ll always be a Philly at heart and the Mets know that! He did hit a walk off hit against them in ‘08! haha.

  22. Brian of CO Says:

This hurts, but I still really enjoy his comment that he will always consider himself a Phillie. LOL
