Hamels and Myers exchange words
Posted by Pat Gallen, Tue, November 03, 2009 11:50 AM
According to Yahoo! Sports, Brett Myers and Cole Hamels reportedly exchanged some heated words in the clubhouse following the Phillies 8-6 win on Monday night.
Myers basically asked Hamels what he was doing there, following Hamels’ remarks a day earlier about wanting the season to end. Hamels then followed that up with an expletive aimed at Myers, and Myers was then removed from the clubhouse.
According to the Twitter of Leslie Gudel of Comcast SportsNet, Gudel claims Myers was in a joking mood as she stood next to the two players.
The feeling here is that the Hamels words have been taken out of context, although in no way should he have spoken about the season ending at a time like this. Myers would have been wise to keep his mouth shut on the subject, as someone who has been oft-injured himself and has barely pitched in the playoffs. Hamels deserves to get killed for this, and he did issue an apology of sorts, but he has to be smarter and more in control of his emotions, especially at a time when the Phillies are under the harshest microscope.

Hamels is doing all the wrong things. I hope he doesnt implode like Ryan Leaf. His mental make up is seriously in doubt when myers can get under his skin with a little ribbing.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:05 pm
This makes me think a bit about how Rollins was grilled by the fans and media after the “front runners” comment. It was bad a for few days until Jimmy won everyone back by performing on the field. The same will be expected of Cole. If he puts up a good performance in game seven (there will be one) then all will be forgiven.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Pat, I totally disagree with your statement.
Someone needs to be up in his face, big time. His team mates heard these comments, saw his reaction to the error committed behind him and know that Cole is a princess. He needs to be dropped a peg or 2. If this can kindle a fire under him all the better.
As a starting pitcher, his role is one of leadership and he needs to command respect on the field and off it. As a starting pitcher, one who stood out in the spotlight when the light shone his way, he needs to be supportive in order to gain respect and support.
Good for Brett –
As for Cole prancing around the mound like a rooster after each strike out, from his last outing, that looks like it too was addressed by Chahlie.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Brooks – completely agree… myers is a punk, and for him to think that would be funny to hamels kind of tells you about myers, but it’s about time someone got after hamels. Maybe this will help him pitch with a chip, maybe it won’t do anything. But not doing anything hasn’t helped hamels so far.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Brooks, this is not the time or the place to publicly ream Hamels out, especially from a guy (Myers) who has done some unsavory things in his tenure here.
I’d rather have Utley, Rollins, and Charlie speak to him behind closed doors, and then have Hamels apologize to the team after a good ribbing from the leaders of this team. Not Myers.
Myers may have been joking, but to do that in a public forum in front of the media is just the wrong way. Hamels should have been lashed at, but Myers is the wrong guy to do it and did it at the wrong time.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:20 pm
Cole Hamels has been aweful this entire season. He was fabulous last post season. Then he did not work hard after getting the contract and did not come to camp prepared. His mentality scares me and his comments. I think he has the abitlity to bounce back has to work at it. I give props to brett for getting in his face.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:21 pm
According to Leslie Gudel’s twitter:
Myers didn’t know about Coles comments telling me “I don’t read the paper”. Myers later apologized to Cole for the bad timing of his joke.
Sorry but given everything else Myers has said and done, he is clearly lying his face off right here. There is no way he could have said what he said, worded the way it was without knowing what Hamels has said. It’s not like Hamels is known for leaving early from games or being the first guy out of the locker room after games are over. Myers didn’t just say “why are you here?” he used the word quit. Joking or not, he knew what and why he said it. I am so tired of his crap I really am. Next year he can be someone else’s underachieving headache.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Im glad Cole got some fire on Myers comments. Its amazing how bad we wanted cole to pitch last year. We were all mad that he could not come back in an pitch those final innings. We need that cole for game 7. If we get there I would start him and pull him if he gets into trouble. go to happ. hamels, happ, then lee to finish it. oh baby.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Its nice to see that our local media is doing what they can to bury it before the rest of the media and the new york media especially, blows it sky high. Thanks leslie.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Hey Brett, pot call the kettle black much?
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Oh, this WILL get out, especially to the NY media. How many times in last night’s game did Joe Buck(a$$hole) mention Cole’s statement? They will run with this, no doubt.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:34 pm
Let NY run with it. More fuel for the fire. If anything that should motivate Cole to pitch the game of his life if given the chance.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Maybe it’ll be the kick in the pants Hamels need to channel the spirit of himself from the 2008 post-season.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:42 pm
Cole is probably just annoyed that the rest of the team haven’t been cashing in on their celebrity to help others like he’s doing with the Hamels Foundation. I hope it isn’t wearing him down too much.
As for Myers––shut it, cretin.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:43 pm
There’s sarcasm up there, btw. And no, not in the second statement.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Pat, if this was a blip that was uttered by Hamels perhaps something out of his character I would agree – have Chahlie or some of the boys speak to him in private behind closed doors. Coles shenanigans are becoming well known. Cole deserved this. He is on a TEAM that needs to pull together as a cohesive unit. This is not HIS team, that was not HIS game (the Utley errror).. Enough of the pampering. This is not about Coles private life or affairs, this is about the TEAM.
Ed R., Phils fan – Meyers is a chump, no doubt about it and I hope like most of you that he is someone else’s problem next year. Perhaps if he ever lived up to the hype that our own media created, we might be thinking a little differently. But, every clubhouse needs a spark, someone to speak the mind for the team and a push. Maybe this just what was needed.
Point of note: Cole was booed at the intro on Sunday night, not loudly but enough to notice.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:44 pm
I also agree with Brooks. Maybe Myers isn’t the ideal role model, but you can never accuse him of a lack of effort. We could not have won last year without Cole, and I will always be a huge fan because of it, but he needs to save his own personal pity party until next week.
Comparing J-Roll and Hamels comments is apples and oranges. If Rollins said “you guys are front runners, and I’m not playing hard anymore”, it would be a little more relevant. Hamels has a lot of damage control to do – 7 innings of shutout ball Thursday night would be a good start. Go Phils – wfc2009!
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Bet Cole’s glad he’s not a woman or Myers may have knocked seven shades of shite out of him.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:51 pm
I don’t understand booing Hamels but there will always be a few jerks in the crowd and not much you can do about it. Of course his comments and Myers reactions are being blown out of proportion because it is the World Series and it is against the Yankees.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:51 pm
Horsefeathers Hamels….It is nice to see him emotional and angry. It shows that he cares. It shows that there is fire under the cute, skinny form. He needs to light a fire. As for Myers, he is the exact opposite. Sometimes out of control, sometimes in meltdown mode. often self-destructive on the mound. Put them together and we might get the right combination. Let’s go Phils. We may be in for a nice surprise. I hope so.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Prediction: I said from the start that this series would go 7 (not exactly the way I invisioned it…with the Phillies down 3-1) but hey we are still alive…Pedro is going to pitch 7 innings of 2 run ball and the Phillies explode again and touch up Andy for 7 runs….Phillies win game 6 (7-2)
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:53 pm
The mess feels uncharacteristic of this team. Myers sure doesn’t mind being the start of a problem.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Exactly Justin – This isnt how this team operates and that goes back to Myers being classless. If he was joking, did he honestly think Hamels would find that funny? At a time like this? No, he was being a straight J.O.
In no way am I sticking up for Hamels. It was a stupid comment and he has pouted like a baby for too long this season. He showed up out of shape, and that has translated into what we see today. However, Myers has no business being the one to step in and say something. Not with his track record.
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:02 pm
Who cares?
Neither of these guys are likely to pitch again in this series. And Myers is gone after this season.
They can work out their differences on the bench while the rest of the guys are playing their butts off in Game 6.
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:04 pm
I agree Pat…both players are at fault here. The media just eats stuff like this up. Cole needs to get some interviewing tips from the rest of the Phillies…get right to the point in their interviews and don’t give the media any ammunition whatsoever.
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:08 pm
I’m glad someone is calling out Hamels for being a princess. Say what you will abour Myers, but no one can accuse him of not being a competitor. When Brad Lidge was struggling, a lot of people were calling for Myers to close, but now where are they?
Myers wishes he was pitching right now instead of Cole, and it’s getting to the point where I agree. I’d rather have someone who wants the team to win.
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:12 pm
I wonder what Chahlie’s take is on this?
Which behavior is more harmful and which is more beneficial to the team winning?
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Brett, I guess the reason you were out partying and getting into a bar brawl the night before your first rehab game was your “competetive” nature getting the best of you?
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Something probably needed to be said but Myers was not the right person to say it and I’m not sure if in the lockerroom after a huge win was the right time, either. Confidence is everything… we want to build on the win NOT the question marks that remain.
Game 6… one at a time. Howard gets his butt in the cages and has a big night (a couple of RBI singles and a late game HR). Chase gets hit at least once… maybe twice. Jimmy keeps it going and one of the killer IZ’ comes thru.
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Hey guys, this was on philly.com:
http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/phillies_zone/Myers_witness_No_confrontation.html
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Philly.com is now refuting the reports…I figured someone would’ve reported it by now. LOL..I look to see the most recent comments and for some reason, somehow someone was able to post nearly 1 hour into the future!!! maybe it’s just my PC, but figured to share the news.
It didn’t smell right from the gate. It’s just not how our team handles things.
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/Myers_witness_No_confrontation.html
Let’s Go Phils!
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Hamels needs to enroll in a “How to Talk to the Media 101″ course.
this isn’t the first time he has slipped up and said something stupid to the media. ie. New York Mets = Choke Artists.
You just can’t let them bait you like that.
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:44 pm
@Dan>for some reason, somehow someone was able to post nearly 1 hour into the future!!
Would you hook me up with tonight’s lotto?
GO PHILS!!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:45 pm
This sounds like nothing.
Leslie Gudel says she was right there, standing between them and there was no confrontation. Myers said it didn’t happen. Philly.com says it didn’t happen.
Meanwhile, the Yahoo report cites an unnamed “witness.”
If they did have words, and Gudell was right there, I’m sure she would have reported it. People lose their jobs if they don’t get those stories…..
It all sounds like bullsh*t to me.
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:46 pm
These two head cases are made for each other. Hopefully Myers is gone next year and Hamels learns a little bit about being humble, keeping your mouth shut and performing (wouldn’t hurt to get a third pitch either.)
With the $14 Mil they save from Myers the Phillies can buy themselves some decent bullpen help.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Stop worrying what a bunch of out-of-town reporters write about the Phillies locker room. It sounds to me like they’re just being sarcastic, something I do every day with my friends. If I had someone follow me around all the time and report out-of-context jokes, then you’d get a totally wrong idea about my life too.
These players have thought about playing in the World Series all their lives and I’m sorry if the way the handle the stress isn’t easily understandable. Every time a Phillie walks to the plate, I can imagine the next pitch will get knocked out of the park. And every time a Phillie starts heads to the mound, I imagine him striking out the side. Everyone needs to relax and enjoy the ride.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:11 pm
The responsible thing to do would be to remove this post from the Phillies Nation website… we don’t need this and in case everyone forgot, we play game 6 tomorrow in NY.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:19 pm
Original chuck p- how’s that responsible? We are reporting what is surrounding the phillies and this is a hot
topic. Is it stupid? Yes. But it’s newsworthy today.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:45 pm
todd zolecki said that the quit term is a running joke in the clubhouse. ie he would ask if charlie is around and someone would say “nah, he quit”. so earlier bret asked if cole was around and someone said “nah, he quit”, and so he had that saying in his head when he saw him later, saying “what are you doing here, i thought you quit”. as for the comeback, cole was basically joking back with him. not too long after someone said that victorino said something and cole said something like “whats he going to do, fight me with one arm?”
i’m paraphrasing b/c i heard this while driving, but basically this is national media who are never around these guys taking it out of context. according to every single person that is close to these guys, its a non-issue and was all a joke.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:18 pm
I’m sick of this. Cole made a mistake and Brett made a joke…..
Time to MOVE ON.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Myers should’ve chucked Hamels’ gear out into the hallway
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:43 pm
It seems like a standard joke
“Hey what are you doing here, I thought you quit”
“F*** You”
I’m pretty sure that’s not the first or last exchange like that in the locker room
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:47 pm
I agree with the Original… This is no time to be posting about this type of rumors/gossip. Take it down guys.
We need positive energy here.. Leave this stuff for the offseason. Why not a post about Utley and his HR record? Game 6 is tomorrow!!! We gotta game to win!
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:48 pm
I just think that the BIGGER story is Game 6. What should we expect to see in game 6… what if Shane can’t go? How should the Phillies be preparing (what did Pettitte do the last time we faced him?)?
I think that this is NY Post propaganda… if several reports denied that it actually happened, then it might be much to do about nothing. It’s ok to report that it happened but also report that there are several reports that say that it never happened. I guess that I’m just worried that we’re going to forget about what lies ahead… Andy Pettitte and Yankee stadium.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:54 pm
More bad news for Phillies fans, we’re 0-3 against the Yankees this World Series heading into Game 6. The Philadelphia Cliff Lee’s are 2-0 but the Cliff Lee’s will now resign from service. Good luck Philly, you’ll need it.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:26 pm
John -
“More bad news for Phillies fans, we’re 0-3 against the Yankees this World Series heading into Game 6.” This is the first time we’ve played New York in the WS since 1950. What are you talking about.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Kinda seems like normal bs talk that would happen in any workplace. I know I bust other employees balls about messin up or callin out or whatever. But I totally support Brett myers in this. I like his competitive edge over someone who just wants the season to end already.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:28 pm
VIC WILL PLAY….which is nice cause Francisco has a candy arm out there…
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:42 pm
THIS CRAP NEEDS TO GO AWAY…..THIS IS EXACTLY THE THING JOE BUCK AND THE TRAITOR MCCARVER LOVE TO MENTION ON THE AIR.
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:55 pm
If we get to game 7–give the ball to Cole-he is the best we have after Lee and is due for one of his dominate starts—forget the rest of this nonsense
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:16 pm
Dominate thru 3 to 4 innings maybe…The Rays were a good team, this Yankee line-up is from baseball Hell and you can’t get by with a 90+ mph straight arrow 4 seamer and a change-up 2nd or 3rd time thru the line-up esp., when after 3 innings, your FB drops to 88 mph. Plus he doesn’t what the ball despite what he says
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:55 pm
McCarverspeak would argue that there’s a lot in favor of the Phillies: No team has ever won 27 World Series titles, and many have won 3.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:00 pm
If the Phils are able to pull out game 6 I think we could see Charlie opt for a starter by committee approach in game 7 i.e. Happ, Hamels, Myers and Lee each go 2 innings a piece.
November 4th, 2009 at 2:38 am
Hi there, i would like to tell the website http://www.cherishtheword.com. here is motivation meaning for negative words.
Thanks
November 4th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
screw the rumor talk. We need to RALLY behind the team.
