Myers Will Not Return Next Season
Posted by Pat Gallen, Fri, November 06, 2009 02:42 PM
Brett Myers has been told by Ruben Amaro Jr. that he will not return to the Phillies in 2010. Amaro talked with Myers and made it clear that the team would not pursue him.
Myers will be a free agent and should draw considerable attention as either a starter or reliever. In eight seasons with the Phillies, Myers was 73-63 with a 4.40 ERA in 240 games.
This comes as a surprise to some, as it appeared Myers would come back to the team willingly for much less money. With the lack of top notch relief pitchers on the market, the Phillies could have fit Myers into their plans in the bullpen for next year. However, the headache was too much for the front office and the ties have now been severed.

What is your source?!?!?
November 6th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/Phillies_wont_bring_Myers_back_next_season.html
Its all over.
November 6th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
And by its all over, I mean the story. Not making any insinuation about the Phils or Myers…
November 6th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Tampa or Baltimore will sign him.
November 6th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
i think that it is clearly a mistake to let him go, especially if he was willing to stay for a home town discount. he still would had been useful as a starter or even as a reliever since these are 2 areas the team needs help in. on the other side of things, he is a block head and has said and done a lot of dumb things and that wont be missed. just tough to let go some of the real key parts of that world series championship team. hopefully he goes to the AL and not someone like the mets or braves or someone we gotta see 12-20 times a year.
November 6th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
This shocks me a bit. Seems to me a spring training to get him ready to return to the bullpen might have been what the Phillies needed if Lidge can’t regain form.
November 6th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
I think it will be Baltimore, Tampa wouldn’t shock me either. I think Milwaukee is an option, who knows, maybe the Mets will offer him a contract. That would be interesting.
November 6th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
In consecutive years, an old favorite of mine will have left the team, but not by choice. It was Pat the Bat last year, and now Brett the Threat this year… I’m incredibly sad right now.
November 6th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
bye Myers
Is he worthy of eventually joining the Phillies wall of fame? I’m not sure. I guess probably not.
our bullpen for next year (unless we sign someone):
Lidge, Madson, Romero, Park, Eyre, Durbin, Condrey
November 6th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
When did he talk abotu not wanting high mainenance players?
If they traded Hamels like that, Id call KC and ask for greinke…thouh the Royals would never accept an even swap. Grienke has more upside that has yet to be tapped.
November 6th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Keith, only Lidge, Madson and Romero are under contract. Park is a free agent, as is Eyre, and he might retire. Durbin and Condrey are both under contract if the Phillies exercise their options, if not its to the unemployment line with Myers.
I think the Phillies would be dumb not to resign Park but who knows what Park wants to do. He might want to be a starter.
November 6th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
I’m SHOCKED by this .. considering we have needs for A STARTER.. and a bullpen guy that go long-innings, and a guy with the ability to CLOSE ..
I’m really shocked that they didn’t try to make a deal with Myers
I can see a team like the Dodgers or Rangers going after Myers.. a team that needs a nice #3-#4 … and he is still very talented, a change of scenery might be great for him
November 6th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
My only thought is that they have something better up their sleeve. Lets say that they had BETTER. OR they know the true extent of his injuries.
Otherwise, this is a shocking and perplexing move.
November 6th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
It may be as simple as the fact that there are several good relievers out there with closer potential. The Phils might be willing to pay a little extra for a top notch reliever. I appreciate what Brett has given through the years, but I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt. They got out just in time with Pat Burrell. As long as you bring back Chan Ho, and look for maybe one more decent long reliever they should be fine.
Kendrick might also be an option he looked pretty good when he came up in September and while we might not know how good he’ll pitch we know he has the stamina to throw multiple innings if needed.
November 6th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Good riddance to a very immature yet strong talent. Myers will never reach his potential. Short attention span, strong thirst and a wife beater. We don’t need the guy no matter how good he is . Good luck, Brett, goodbye and good riddance. We can use that $12 million a year elsewhere.
November 6th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Myers made his bed the night he got punched out on the eve of his first rehab appearance. Whether or not he initiated what resulted in the black eye he never should have put himself in that position considering the circumstances and it showed his commitment to the Phillies.
We’re in need of more reliable guys that Brett Myers going into next season.
November 6th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
I’m a little disappointed, but not very surprised. I think Ruben didn’t like Brett personally.
Looks like Feliz could be next: http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/Phils_exploring_alternatives_to_Feliz_Lidges_elbow_examined.html
November 6th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
If you know how to speak Amaro, after reading that, I think Feliz is gone.
November 6th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
I think Amaro didn’t appreciate the head games and the whole lying about why he had a black eye incident. I don’t blame Amaro for that. Myers will benefit from a change of scenery.
November 6th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
I say keep Feliz! He’s solid and relatively cheap. 3B is definitely not a hole in our roster.
The issues are the bullpen and the bench — a bench player that could be a solid DH hitter, for example… and a strong arm, something like a Sherill… those 2 things won’t come cheap. Feliz is one of the finest defensive 3Bs in baseball. And he’s clutch. Too bad that some people simply expect every single hitter in our lineup to hit above .275…
November 6th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
this is a mistake on behalf of the phillies.
brett “the headache/headcase” myers was still worth his salt as a reliever, especially at a discount rate he would have been paid.
despite his aggressive behavior he was a gung ho phillie through and through. he saved his malarky for off the field.
rethink him as reliever
November 6th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
I won’t miss Brett. He was never a favorite of mine.
November 6th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Yea I read that as Amaro is looking past Pedro Feliz too … wonder if they’ll not pick up his option, but leave open the possibility of resigning him later in the offseason?
They can’t afford Figgins.. BUT.. Adding Figgins, and dropping Rollins in the order makes us stronger top-to-bottom .. I can’t see them doing that though, we aren’t the freaking Yankees
November 6th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
I think Ruben and the entire organization has had their fill of Myers and his antics. They gave him ample time to change his behavior and gain some maturity, but I haven’t really seen much of a change. Once this F.O. decides they’re done with someone, that’s pretty much it, and I think Myers could see the writing on the wall. Can’t say I’m too upset about this, he’s too volatile and just simply, a headcase.
November 6th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
Manny – I agree. How many #7 hitters were better offensivefly than Feliz in 2009? I don’t know for sure, but it can’t be very many. And we know there aren’t many 3B better defensively. Definitely hang on to him for next season.
November 6th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
Myers was not let loose because of his off-field problems, but because he’s never been consistent and suffered a major injury. Sure, he’ll probably recover with more work, but that work shouldn’t be in the middle of the season. I’m certain the front office would rather spend money on a player with fewer question marks next to his name.
I’m glad they’re going in a different direction. I won’t have to deal with more years of Myers’ exasperating inconsistency.
November 6th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
Definitely. 80+ RBIS… wasn’t that essentially the same number of RBIs that Pat the Bat, then a NO.5 hitter, gave us in 2008?
November 6th, 2009 at 6:01 pm
Re: Myers
He blew any chances of staying in the team with that bar incident.
Everyone was expecting him to step up for the playoffs, especially after he showed positive signs during his quick recovery… but that incident took away all the progress he had made. It’s a shame, cause I really liked him for his competitive spirit and his fire. At times this season it felt like the team missed someone like him. But I don’t think this move will be a make-or-break issue for us next year. So I wish him the best of luck, and I’ll give him a standing O next time I see him pitch.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Myers closing for the Marlins next season (and having a better year than Lidge).
November 6th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
He would only be used as a closer here, he never hit his potential as a starter here. This organization knows what it is doing. they have plenty of young arms to take that 5th starter role, Drabek is one that jumps at me!
November 6th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
I wouldn’t be suprised to see the Phills give some guys like Taylor and others get a shot at the Phillies bench slots
November 6th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
The Phillies won’t give up a big piece of their future for bench help. No way.
I heard the Phillies do want to resign Park if he is willing to come back.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
I’m surprised to hear peoples reactions, like they actually expected him to return…I mean seriously, the guy was nothing more than a good #4 man in the rotation who got paid #1-#2 guy money. Every year was the same with Myers…Got the ball opening day, and got bombed every season. I wouldn’t be hurt if he stayed as a reliever, but that would never happen. I always looked at Brett as ”that bad apple in the batch” type of player, who just didn’t belong. Good luck to him somewhere else.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
He’s not a good clubhouse guy, he has said and done some very immature things, he never lived up to his contract, he has injury issues and nobody is really sure whether he can be an effective starter OR reliever anymore. Yea, I’m not surprised… I mean, you knew they weren’t going to pay him anywhere near what he’s making now.
November 6th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
Apart from the personal issues, Myers was making way too much money to justify bringing him back. Hometown discount is one thing, but how low is he going to go after he cleared $12 mill this year? Right now his only plus pitch is his curve, which is still very good. But his 89 mph ‘heater’ gets tagged with regularity, and his slider hasn’t been plus since 2006. Add in durability concerns, etc., etc. and yeah, there’s more reliable ways to spend that money.
Shame. Brett has talent, but hasn’t really put it together in a consistent way. And his talent seems to be in decline. Pass. He has a ring, and will always be remembered as a significant part of last year’s run. Things could be worse.
November 7th, 2009 at 11:01 am
It seems to me that any time there was any negitive stuff comming from the Phillies clubhouse, it had Bretts name attached to it. This whole thing with him assulting his wife. The blow up on Charley in the dug out. The I lied because i was embarrased when I fell out of my truck. This past world series with Cole. Passion is one thing but you have to think “Whats next from Brett” was kind of on the mind of everyone in the club house. To win the Phillies don’t need drama. They need players that will keep there mouths shut and there eye on the prize and put the team above everything else. I don’t thing the Phillies see Brett as that guy.
November 7th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
One of the few classless guys on an otherwise classy team. I’m happy to see him go. I prefer my teams to not only be good athletes but good people, and Bretty Myers has never seemed to fit that description.
November 7th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
I am worried about the rotation for next year. Figure Lee, Hamels (assuming he can get his head straightened out), Blanton, and Happ. Three lefties and one righty. They need a #3 righty to balance things out. I think Myers could have filled that role although his history of injuries makes it difficult for the team to commit to him. Looking at the list of free agent pitchers, I don’t see anyone that really fits well and I can’t see them jumping Drabek up to the majors anytime soon. Kendrick is a good guy but just doesn’t have Major League stuff. I hope Ruben and team know what they’re doing here.
November 7th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Jim – you forgot one more lefty: Moyer. Kendrick isn’t bad now that he has the change-up to complement his sinker. I don’t know if they will bring him into the rotatikon but god knows we need a ground ball pitcher.
November 7th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
The problem with Myers is that he always been a #2 and unfortunately we lack the pitching acumen to have a] realized it and b] have polished him in the minors. Plus why would a club in a hitters park try to make a fly ball pitcher a #1…he can’t strike-out everyone. Look at Hamels he’s a fly ball/ strike-out pitcher and we see how he struggled with the long ball. Thank god Lee realized this shortcoming early in his career when he put up absolutely horrendous numbers in hitter’s parks and so developed a two seamer.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
Average salary info here: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2008-01-17-salaries_N.htm
Myers is an average pitcher making 2 1/2 times the average starting pitcher salary. Baseball Reference lists Kris Benson and Adam Eaton as two of the top ten pitchers he compares to. Enough said! Not looking to bash the guy. His AB against CC last year was total entertainment but it’s time to turn the page on this one.
GO PHILS!!!
