Odds and Ends: Halladay, Park, Duchscherer

Posted by Pat Gallen, Tue, December 01, 2009 11:32 AM

-Roy Halladay has made it clear to trade him now, or not at all.  The 32-year old righty gave the Blue Jays an ultimatum: find a suitor before spring training or I am playing this season in Toronto.

Halladay does not want rampant trade rumors to become a hazard during the season, so as soon as spring training begins, he is taking himself out of the running for a trade, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney. That gives the Jays a little less than three months to secure a deal for the former Cy Young winner.

Olney has also speculated the teams in the running for Halladay, with the Phillies being one of just a handful of teams that includes, of course, the Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels.  With a new contract on the horizon for Doc, it’s assumed there are only a few teams that will be able to afford the price of prospects, plus an extension.

-Dave Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News does a bit of speculating himself as today is the final day for teams to offer arbitration to their free agents.  Murphy suggests the Phillies will offer it to type-B FA Chan Ho Park, however, he does not believe Scott Eyre will be offered the same.

Park made $2.5 million last season and is in line for a raise, but has made it known he wants the opportunity to start.  Eyre made $2 million last year, although he has said he will retire if the Phils do not offer him a deal.

-A hot name on the open market is Justin Duchscherer.  He is a right-handed reliever-turned-starter that has been an all-star in the past with the Oakland A’s.  Duchscherer battled clinical depression last season while recovering from hip and elbow surgeries.  By all accounts he is well again and looking for a fresh start.

Duchscherer is 32-years old and went 10-8 in 2008 with a 2.54 ERA before missing all of ‘09.  He was an all-star out of the bullpen in 2005, but his jump to the rotation opened some eyes, also earning him a berth on the 2008 team.  Before the 2008 ASG break, Duchscherer was 10-5 with a 1.82 ERA as a starter.

He is a buy-low candidate that the Phillies should be seeking as uncertainly looms about the health of Jamie Moyer.  The Pirates and Rockies are two teams eying him up, according to Yahoo! Sports.

    ***News Flash***
In an effort to further lower the Jay’s bargaining position, Roy Halladay accidentally killed a hooker, burned a Canadian Flag, and said he hates hockey and donuts.

  2. Georgie Says:

I have to think it’s become an extremely stressful and unpleasant situation for Roy in Seattle. They should do everything they can to find him another team, I just don’t see how they would want him there for another year when he wants out so badly. His attitude, eventually, will affect his pitching and the morale of the entire team.

  3. Andrew Says:

Aaaaand Brian Schneider is now a Phillie.

I had a message from a friend of a FB friend this am, and he told me I have a mental illness because of my liberal tendencies, so I would welcome someone who also has some head problems.

  6. David, the Mets fan from Queens Says:

I wonder what you, Phillies fans, think of the Brian Schneider signing? Presuming that Brian passes his physical, the Phillies will have an excellent catching duo of Carlos Ruiz and Brian Schneider. That’s not a bad catching duo to have, at all!

  7. Don M Says:

SWEET.. Brian Schneider will give Ruiz some much needed rest.. and seems to be a perfect fit for that backup catcher role ..

I was talking about him last week, but thought he would probably command too much money .. Nice work RUBEN

I don’t think the Ducheserer? will be a “buy-low” … he’s a guy with lots of talent, and the ability to fill either role on the pitching staff

I don’t think he’ll be expensive.. but I think that teams that don’t have set payrolls will be looking into him .. I don’t know how we would afford him.. plus a closer-type pitcher, plus a starting 3b .. and keep the payroll under $140

  8. Andrew Says:

Schneider is a revenge signing. Love it!

  9. Don M Says:

he already passed his physical.. and already signed the deal

I like it.. it’s not the greatest move in off-season history.. but its a nice “puzzle-piece” kinda deal

He fills a role on the team.. much better than Chris Coste or Paul Bako

weird that the mets took Coste, and let Schneider leave ??? when are they going to fire Omar Minaya?

  11. Ed R. Says:

I am good with the Schneider signing. A clear upgrade over Coste and Bako. No disrespect to Coste. Hopefully Schneider can add a spark to this team on the days he gets to start.

  12. Bob in Bucks Says:

Schneider always seemed to step up against the Phillies. I presume we are not paying him $4million! I would have preferred a younger guy, he is trending down but he knows the league. Seems the Phillies like the back-up to be older.

  13. Lucky Says:

I like the Schneider deal alot…Is it me or does it seem like Amaro took a shot at the Mets for signing Coste and turning the tables and signing their catcher? If you ask me I would personally say that the Mets won that trade, cause I would take Coste over Schneider anyday.

  14. Pat Gallen Says:

Hey guys, Schneider post is up if you want to jump over that that thread…

  15. Don M Says:

Coste over Schnieder ?? really ..

  16. Chuck Says:

Coste over Schneider because it’s an “emotional” pick???……I like Chris Coste a lot…..he’s a great guy and one of those “Phillies for life”…..but PLEASE…..Schneider is an AWESOME pick-up!!…..Kudos to RAJ..

  17. Ed 2 Says:

Amaro seems like the type to take a shot at one of those buy low pitchers. He has Duchscherer, Harden, and Sheets to pick from, I just hope he picks the right one. I wonder why no one sees the injury ridden Harden as a reliever with his high K/9 rate? Picking one of those three and hoping for the best seems like the best way to keep costs down and potentially improve the club. Is Moyer/Kendrick really going to be our 5th starter?

  18. Don M Says:

It depends on what “buy-low” means … cause Harden and Sheets will probably get $8+ M per year .. that’s not buying low

    It’s high-risk, high-reward

the risk for Dusch is lower, because he will come cheaper.. but he would probably still get $4 or 5 Million per season I think?

  19. beta sigma shag Says:

I really do not think Doc will be coming to Philly, first the FO does not work that way, give up a lot for one year of a guy. Second he would be pretty expensive. I do not know that much about Duchscherer, other than I would have a hard time pronouncing his name. I think Park is crazy wanting to start. Does he want to start for Baltimore, Washington, or Pittsburg, or be a key piece out of the pen for a team that has a chance to go to the WS for the third year in a row. It just does not make sense to me. He was pretty good out of the pen for us last year.

  20. Lucky Says:

Yes def Coste over Schneider…Schneider may be the better catcher (BUT not by that much), but Coste has much more power, and much more heart than Schneider. Hats off to the Mets. They got one hell of a guy on their ballclub. It may be an emotional favorite, Im not sure but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Like I said, Im not upset with the signing. Amaro did good here.

  21. George Says:

Harden and Sheets will command more than Duchscherer, and Harden is a dud because he rarely makes it through the 6th inning. In spite of his tremendous stuff, he’ll strain anyone’s bullpen.

As 5th starters go, there are options that, though not great pitchers, can at least go 6-7. These “high risk/high reward” types may prove too expensive for the back end of the rotation, particularly if the high risk part of the equation kicks in.

The only one who might work would be Duchscherer, but even he might cost too much for a number five.

  22. Manny Says:

Poor Jays… at this rate they won’t be getting too much for Halladay…

  23. Jeff of Nova Says:

I loved Coste, but Schneider is a big upgrade. Those thinking he is a is not are thinking with their hearts not brains. A back up that has such a ridiculously strong knowledge of the NL East hitters is huge.

Schneider was a Phillies killer glad to have him.
So my wish list now sits like this for Christmas.

    3B- Beltre

several low salary relievers that we invite to camp to compete. Signing a reliever cause he had one good year somewhere is not how it works for relievers. We found diamonds in the rough like Durbin, Romero, Condrey, etc.

Starting pitcher, now we all know Halladay is the best fit here, but seems unlikely unless we are able to get him without giving up, any of the starters we have now or Drabek. If we don’t then a Sheets, or Durchsherer would be a nice option.

Bench hitters that can hit! I wouldn’t mind seeing Michael Taylor on the bench this year, but noticed that he is not even on the 40 man roster, Quintin Berry is though. I have a feeling that Taylor maybe traded for something we need in the next 3 months.

  24. Dylan Says:

    GET DUKE!

  25. jrollpatrol08 Says:

    jeff,

yea i agree i want beltre for christmas also. his deal is gonna look like 3yr/24mil is my prediction

i also like the idea of low salary relievers, especially since these guys always seem to be overpaid to end up playing poorly. from relievers, you never know what ur gonna get. although i wouldnt necessarily consider durbin and condrey to be ‘diamonds in the rough,’ i agree with your overall train of thought. bullpen strength is a necessity but dont need to overspend for a jjputz type that will not be worth a cent

i dont really see halladay coming here because ruben doesnt want to give up the farm and it would be hard financially to keep him in a 4year extention. i like duchscherer but he is young enough to command a decent salary as far as figures and years. i like him over the sheets, harden who seem to be injured all the time

the reason taylor isnt onthe roster because he will start out in aa or aaa. you cant just plug hiim in on the bench with the current outfield we have now. he will get more playing time and conditioning at the lower levels and come up mid season maybe

  26. George Says:

If the Phils sign one of those high risk guys it will be someone like Rodrigo Lopez: really cheap. According to Amaro, they are looking for depth, in case Moyer and Kendrick don’t work out. You just don’t sign a fifth starter for the money Sheets, Harden, and probably even Duchscherer will get, and you certainly don’t pay much for a number 6 or 7.
