   Durbin 1 inning, 2 Ks!

   Now, it’s Bastardo’s turn… I hope he keeps it going! We’re gonna need this guy in our pen!

   watched more of the flyers but the little that i saw was promising. nice stuff from baez there even with getting into a little trouble. happ was flat out dealing. wish bastardo had a better outing but he was mixing some breaking balls in there and didn’t pitch as poorly as his line indicates.

   I agree, christopher… Bastardo was actually throwing some pretty good pitches… it seems that the hits he gave up were all weak down the middle, and then he paid the price for a couple defensive mistakes… Not worried too much about his outing.

   Mad Dog and Baez looked good, too. Great pitching today all-around.

   In fairness to Conlin, he acknowledged his article would be strongly debated. The current Yanks infield is undeniably stronger, but I love ours. How bout his stab at poetry? What about this:

   Halladay then Hamels; Blanton & Happ
   Just another week where we widen the gap.

    Well, it was interesting that Bill did leave out the catchers position in his infield. If the catcher was included it would be neither the Yanks or Phils but the 75-76 Reds. Throwing Johnny Bench in there kinda tips the scales a bit.

    Once again in defense of Conlin, he did not say the Phils’ 2010 infield was the best, he said it was POTENTIALLY the best. I wish people would pay a little more attention to the actual words. No wonder newspapers are failing; people don’t know how to read them.

    Also, Conlin is not the only person who doesn’t figure the catcher as part of the infield; there are certainly those who believe the catcher is an entire separate classification, much as most people don’t consider the pitcher to be an infielder. A second baseman, for example, doesn’t have to block pitches and throw out base stealers. A second baseman also doesn’t throw breaking stuff.

    The part of the Conlin article which I found pretty stupid was the comparison with Tinker, Evers, and Chance. Sure, they were “modern era” players, but the ball was still deader than the Marlin’s grandstands, and the mitts were barely padded and about the size of surgical gloves.

    Phil and talksportsphilly, I think you miss the point of Conlin’s article, he was not considering defense, purly power, look at the stats he uses, home runs and rbis, he was not talking about defensivly. So the Yankees argument of Tex goes out the window, and how much of a difference is 280 and 270 when 270 hits more home runs and has more RBIs, not much, so Howard is a clear winner over tex. And he explains the problem with A-Roid on why his numbers are off. I am not saying I totaly agree with Conlin, his opion is in no way totaly off base, speaking strictly power numbers wise

    I see nothing surprising at all about sending Mathieson to minor league camp. The Phils’ management has been saying all spring that he needed innings, and needed work on his secondary pitches.

    If you look at his innings pitched since his second Tommy John surgery, it’s easy to see that that Mathieson hasn’t pitched enough to prove he’s fully recovered. With TJ surgery, it’s the fastball that comes back first; breaking balls take a lots more innings pitched, which Mathieson hasn’t had yet.
