Oliver Perez is a good pitcher. His stuff is fantastic and his preparation sound. On the other hand, the Phillies face him frequently. They should understand by now how to reach base when he assumes the mound. His stuff might not permit them, say, nine or ten runs; but enough to support the fine efforts of the Phils' pitchers is expected. It is baffling that no one in the management corps sees that this offense needs revitalization. It is an unwieldy ensemble that can be tuned up - once more - with some hitters who are intelligent enough to spank the fastball early in the count and to make contact with breaking balls later.
Perez is creative and crafty, but not untouchable. If the Phils learn not to be purely fastball hitters and actually formulate a plan before they put the bats in their hands, he will not be this invincible.

And by the way, Scheity: your comment about the first-base line was classic. And so true.

Reyes was wrong and that cannot be denied. The Mets all bicker with umpires and celebrate on the field like little children. Not even like ruffians, because ruffians at least have some dignity underneath the wildness. The point is, the Phils are out of first place. The Mets' assertive plate approach should be a lesson to the Phils. I see uppercuts in nearly everybody's swing in the line-up, which accounts for the pop-ups and strike-outs. Slapping breaking pitches the other way, driving juicy fastballs anywhere, bunting runners over, stealing and double-stealing - why can't the Phils invest in these concepts instead of in unrealistic power. As I tell my friends, they must perform as if it were the Dead Ball Era...as if clubbing upper-deckers or even fence-scratchers were impossible. If the speed and agility are not there, then those attributes must be infused to replace the complacency. The key is ADAPTATION - studying pitchers, sensing urgency, forming and reforming strategy. That way, pitchers like Oliver Perez, Ricky Nolasco and Tim Redding would not dominate them like they always seem to - and everybody in red pinstripes would be more satisfied.

And the reigning MVP ought to be damned ashamed of himself. He is no leader. He's playing lousy all season and now he can't even show up on time and he has a problem with it? His true colors are really starting to show and I do not like what I see.

You know what I have no problem pulling for the Phillies. I've pulled for them in worse years. I knew they'd lose a lot of the time (esp during the Francona and Bowa years). The Phils were just an average team. Now they are a great team that has no heart and is playing some of the worst baseball I have ever seen. I don't even feel like watching these guys right now. They waste perfectly good outings by Hamels and Moyer and they absolutely suck. Forget the 9th inning rally the other day. It was total luck that it worked out the way it did. This team is not playing like a winning team at all right now. And if you ask me, they don't deserve a trip to the play offs.

The easiest way to get their attention is to shock them. to trade someone that poeple thought would never get traded, like rollins
