Eaton’s Quote: No Biggie Or Black Eye?

After 6.1 innings of fine work and a standing ovation from the fans, Adam Eaton went to the clubhouse where Tom McCarthy interviewed him. What seemed like your run-of-the-mill “good start” interview took a turn at the very end.

Jimmy Rollins had doubled to put runners at second and third with nobody out. McCarthy told Eaton about this new development.

McCarthy: “So Phils coming on now.”
Eaton: “Makes sense. I’m out of the game.”

Then he grinned right into the camera.

I’m very steamed about this quote by Eaton. Yes, Eaton has the worst run support of any Phillie starter (3.89), but that’s no reason to make a jab at your offense during a TV interview. What’s worse is Eaton had just come off an ovation from the fans — finally Eaton had pitched well enough for us to accept him as one of our own. And what does he do? Open his big mouth.

Last year Eaton got 4.87 run support, yet crapped it away with a 6.29 ERA. Don’t talk, Adam. Pay your dues before the offense shuts down on you on purpose. Now, maybe I’m alone in feeling this heated, but there’s just something not right about Eaton saying this.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
