Odds And Ends: Youman Gone, Bailey To Start Thursday Vs. Phils?

A few notes on this gameday Monday:

  • The Phillies designated Shane Youman for assignment today.

Youman was 0-1 with an 11.28 ERA for Reading this season. He surrendered 33 hits in 22.1 innings. Smell ya later, Shane.

He hit Jeremy Hermida with a pitch yesterday, which occurred — Moyer said — because Hermida wears armor on his elbow. “That’s why [hitters] can go out over the plate,” Moyer said. “If you get hit on the elbow, you don’t feel it when you have armor on. He goes to first base and probably doesn’t even have ice on it after the game. I think it’s a horrible rule. That’s my opinion. Supposedly, you’re supposed to have a medical reason to wear it.”

When Moyer speaks, you listen, and Jamie is dead on. Hitters have been benefiting recently from small things (armor, ballpark size, substances, etc.) that add up to a watered-down era. I don’t necessarily mind 7-5 games, but there is an unfair advantage here.

  • Jim Salisbury (how dare Zolecki have off) notes Jimmy Rollins snapped Tom Gordon out of a funk yesterday.

Gordon walked Luis Gonzalez in the eighth, then threw two balls to Hanley Ramirez. Once the crowd booed all this (of course), Rollins did work. “He got on my ass,” Gordon said. “He said, ‘What the heck are you doing? Throw strikes. Babe Ruth’s dead.’ ” Rollins fears no one, ‘cept the Babe.

  • Pitcher Andrew Carpenter has been sent down to A+ Clearwater.

In Reading he struggled mightily, going 2-6 with a 6.18 ERA in 55.1 innings. At 23, Carpenter seemed to be a dark horse who became a stud; now, he can only hope he improves quickly. This is a huge setback for the right-hander.

He has been pitching in AAA Louisville, where he is 4-4 with a 4.15 ERA.
