Report: Bedard Still On Radar; Garcia?

More from Joel Sherman, who’s busy as a bee this All-Star weekend:

He says the Phillies are still heavily considering Erik Bedard. According to Sherman, a scout says the Phils aren’t put off by Bedard’s injury. Then Sherman writes an interesting spin:

Gillick has an exemplary reputation. But it would be strange to see the Phillies deal prospects that Gillick is extremely knowledgeable about to the Mariners, and then have Gillick become a top Seattle executive. In that case, Gillick would essentially be trading prospects to Gillick and, perhaps, speeding up the rebuilding process for devastated Seattle.

Hey, if Gillick likes Carlos Carrasco and Lou Marson and knows he’s taking over the Mariners next season, wouldn’t you think he might want to stock them up for the future? Isn’t this really, really wrong?

Sherman also reports, and hold your breath, that the Phils are looking at Freddy Garcia.

Garcia was 1-5 with a 5.90 ERA with the Phils last season, before succumbing to a shoulder injury and wasting the Phils of Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez. Floyd, as we know, is 10-5 with a 3.63 ERA this season for the White Sox, and twice came close to throwing no-hitters.

Tim Malcolm

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
