Rumor: Rollins Is Available For Trade

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News reports there are rumors the Phillies are listening to trade propositions for shortstop Jimmy Rollins:

There have been rumors that Philadelphia will listen to offers for the 2007 MVP. Even if true, the price would be prohibitively high. He’d look great in a Giants uniform, but I don’t see him being a realistic target for them.

While I’d immediately slap this nonsense to the curb, I have to point to these things:

  • Rollins showed a tendency to play lax this season, however great.
  • Rollins mouthed off against Philadelphia fans.
  • The Phillies got their title and might look to sell high.

That all said, it would take something huge for the Phils to release Rollins. Moreover, it would mean your opening day shortstop would be a combination of Eric Brunlett and Jason Donald. I love Donald too, but Rollins is a former MVP, a world champion, a leader, and a potential retired number. Rumors are fun.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
