The Dish On Jermaine Dye

A quick rumor from the end of the week, ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago reported the Phillies may be interested in a trade for White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye. That doesn’t mean the Phils have asked about him.

Dye — who hit .292 with 34 HR and 96 RBI last season — is owed $11.5 million in 2009, and has a mutual option for $12 million in 2010. His contract also includes a no-trade clause to six teams. One of those teams is likely the Red Sox, who was on his short list in a 2005 no-trade clause. I wouldn’t think the Phils are on that list.

If the Phils were to trade for Dye — who will be 35 — it would mean likely picking up most of his remaining contract, then giving Chicago some sort of minor league return. It might not be Carlos Carrasco, but something close — maybe Jason Donald.

Dye is a cheaper alternative from other rumored options Magglio Ordonez and Manny Ramirez, and potentially cheaper than Matt Holliday. He’s probably a better contact hitter than Pat Burrell, while still being able to rip off a 30-HR season. He wouldn’t be a bad acquisition, but only if the price isn’t too high. It might be.

With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions.
