Winter Meetings Day 2 Wrap

Here’s your recap of day two of the Winter Meetings.

  • The Phillies rewarded Charlie Manuel will a contract extension through 2011. That would make Manuel the manager of the Phils for seven seasons, the longest-tenured skipper since Paul Owens.
  • The Cubs denied certainty of a trade that would send Jake Peavy to Chicago and possibly Mark DeRosa to Philadelphia. Last night, however, the Phillies confirmed a trade was in the works.
  • In that trade, the Padres are rumored to be looking at catching prospect Jason Jaramillo. Kyle Kendrick joined JA Happ in the trade talk.
  • Raul Ibanez said he wants to play for the Phillies, and it was reported the Phils are among top aggressors to get the outfielder.
  • Derek Lowe also likes the idea of being a Phillie, and it was reported the Phils and Yankees are the highest bidders for him. He wants a five-year deal, reportedly.
  • No movement on the Jamie Moyer and Pat Burrell fronts; however, it seems there’s no way Burrell is returning.
  • The Phils looked into Andy Pettitte as a potential back-end starter.

There will certainly be more juice today, so stay with us. Hopefully the server will be cool today.

Tim Malcolm

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
