Rockies Flush Hamels, Phillies

Cole Hamels wasn’t quite ready for the regular season, giving up five runs in the third inning and 11 hits total en route to a 10-3 loss to the Rockies. He pitched well in the first two innings, but a few squib hits turned into a crooked inning, capped with a home run by Garrett Atkins. Hamels’ final line: 3.2 IP, 7 ER, 11 H, 1 BB, 1 K.

That the Phillies offense continued to look bad did nothing to help. Jayson Werth provided most of the offense, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and a home run. He scored all three runs. Otherwise, Pedro Feliz drove in two runs. Ryan Howard hit three ground balls up the middle, right into the shift, for 4-6-3 double plays.

Carlos Ruiz suffered a strained oblique and left the game. No word yet on the extent of the injury.

JA Happ threw a strong 2.1 scoreless innings; Chad Durbin gave up three runs in one inning. The Phillies are now 1-3.
