Opinion: Mayberry Should Get Call North

Friday night the Phillies designated Miguel Cairo for assignment, meaning he can either be traded or released, or will clear waivers. Very likely, the Cairo era will end in Philadelphia.

Andrew Carpenter likely will move back to Lehigh Valley after tonight’s start; he’s neither the first option for the starting rotation, nor is he the first option in relief. That means someone else will be coming north.

It should be John Mayberry Jr.

Hitting .277 with eight home runs and 25 RBI, Mayberry has shown to be a sufficient right-handed bat in Lehigh Valley. He would be an instant bench upgrade. And he makes perfect sense going into next weekend’s interleague series at Yankee Stadium. New York is scheduled to throw left-handed CC Sabathia and Andy Pettite at the Phils. No better option for designated hitter/outfielder than Mayberry.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
