Andrew Carpenter DFA'd; Phils Sign Schlitter

Andrew Carpenter was designated for assignment today by the Phillies, making way for the signing of former farmhand Brian Schlitter.

Carpenter had been with the organization since 2006, when he was a second round pick. He can still stick with the club if the Phillies are unable to trade him and he passes through waivers. The team can then outright him off the 40-man roster and assign him to the minors.

In five minor league seasons with the Phils, Carpenter accumulated a 45-35 record with a 3.71 ERA. Last season, he went 8-11 with a 4.05 ERA in 27 starts for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He walked 3.2-per-9 and struck out 6.9-per-9. Carpernter also made one start with the big club back in ’09 and pitched in relief once back last season. He had five appearances with the Phillies overall.

Schlitter moved to the Cubs organization in the Scott Eyre deal back in August of 2008. As a reliever, the 25-year-old Schlitter appeared in seven games for the Cubs last season.
