Phillies Rank 9th Globally in Annual Salaries

ESPN the Magazine has put out a list of the world largest-spending teams. No surprise, the Philadelphia Phillies are near the top of the list.

The Phillies rank 9th in the world, paying their players an average of over $5.8 million per year. Their $174 million payroll ranks 5th worldwide. Players wearing red pinstripes make, on average, nearly $112,000 PER WEEK. Most of us would take that in a year. Crazy money being thrown around.

Below is an abbreviated list of the top teams in the world and how much they spend per player. Barcelona, who just lost a thrilling Champions League match to Chelsea last week (for those not into soccer) is tops globally. The top-spending team per-player in North America is the Los Angeles Lakers.

Locally, the Philadelphia Flyers also made the list. They rank #100, paying their athletes an average of about $2.5 million. The Philadelphia 76ers rank 23rd in the world, spending just north of $4.8 million per player on their roster.

Are you surprised that the Phillies rank this high on a global scale? As you can see, many European soccer clubs are also high on that list.
