Phillies Crushed by Mets, Fall 12 Back in East

Another dreadful night for all involved. (AP)

A season that couldn’t get worse did. The Phillies were demolished by the New York Mets 11-1 at Citi Field on Tuesday night, furthering the distance between them and any hopes at a playoff spot.

Now 36-46, the Phillies are in one of the worst funks I’ve witnessed in years. Off the top of my head, I can’t remember a time when the Phillies played this poorly. Not Chase Utley

, nor Ryan Howard, nor Roy Halladay can stop this season from becoming a complete joke. It’s already become one.

Vance Worley was torched for six runs on 10 hits in just four innings of work, while Jonathan Niese made quick work of the Phillies, allowing only three hits in eight innings. The Phillies bullpen, which has been the laughingstock of the club, gave up five runs over the final four innings.

Carlos Ruiz was again the only bright spot as he hit his 11th home run of the season. On the Mets side, David Wright and Daniel Murphy each drove in four runs.

This feeling of dejection hasn’t been felt since the days of the Vet.
