Ruiz Out 4-6 Weeks With Foot Tear

Chalk this up as yet another major blow for the Phillies in this season from hell.

Carlos Ruiz will miss 4-6 weeks with a plantar fascitis and a partial tear in his his left foot. Hector Luna has been recalled from Lehigh Valley. Chooch will be reevaluated in two weeks.

The injuries just keep adding up for this team that has gone through a almost a complete reconstruction from last years 2011 team. They’ve aged rapidly, and this is another sign of that.

And you have to feel for Ruiz, by far the Phillies best player this season. He’s 4th in the National League in hitting with a .334 average, 6th in the NL with a .959 OPS, and accounts for an OWAR of 3.5, better than names like Carlos Gonzalez

and Carlos Beltran.

He was likely a top-5 MVP candidate for his work in the box and behind it. Now, it’s unknown how much more he can give the Phillies in 2012. At this point in the season, there aren’t many reasons to want to watch this fledgling team. Chooch was one of them, but will be out an extended period.
