Asche, Smith Named Minor League Players of the Month

Cody Asche is currently with the Phillies, but that didn’t stop him from winning a minor league award.

The third baseman was named the offensive player of the month after batting .330 with seven home runs, 21 RBI and a .978 OPS in 24 games during July.  Now in Philadelphia, Asche was on a tear before being promoted, putting together a 10-game hitting streak with Lehigh Valley where he was hitting .380 (16-for-42) from July 20 to 29.

Greg Smith, signed in May, wins the honors for pitchers. At Lehigh Valley, the lefty Smith went 3-0 with a 1.06 ERA over five starts in July. The former 6th round selection with the Arizona Diamondback struck out 15 batters while walking only seven in 34.0 innings of work.
