Phillies Select RHP Munson in Rule 5, Lose Rosin

In today’s Rule 5 Draft, the culmination of the Winter Meetings, the Phillies selected righty Kevin Munson from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Munson, 24, saw action in 53 games between Double-A and Triple-A last season, combining for a 4.12 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings. According to Ben Badler of Baseball America, Munson throws a “Low-90s fastball, plus slider with hard bite when he’s on. Misses bats and gets ground balls.” He struggled in the Pacific Coast League last season, as many pitchers do.

The Phillies watch Seth Rosin go to the New York Mets in the Rule 5. Rosin was part of the Hunter Pence trade to the Giants, but struggled in a full season at Double-A reading last season, striking out just 6.8 batters per-9. The big righty sported a 4.33 ERA in 23 starts.
