Phils Drop Shortened Opener to Jays, Watch Santana Throw

The Phillies lost their Grapefruit League opener today 4-3 to the Blue Jays in a rain-shortened, seven inning affair. The Jays got out to an early 1-0 first inning lead off of a Jose Bautista homer off Robert Hernandez. The Phillies answered right back, scoring two in the first on singles by Ryan Howard and Marlon Byrd on four hits and a walk off J.A. Happ. Hernandez and Phillippe Aumont, who replaced Hernandez for the third inning, each gave up two earned. Non-roster invitee Jeff Manship pitched a scoreless fourth and fifth, striking out three, while Antonio Bastardo gave up a hit but no runs in the sixth, and Rule 5 pick Kevin Munson gave up a walk and a hit but also allowed no runs.

While the Phils were competing against the Jays, they were also apparently one of a handful of teams to scout former Cy Young winner Johan Santana, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Heyman quotes reports that say while Santana looked to be in great shape, he was only topping out at 81 on the radar gun.

The Phillies will be in action tomorrow in Dunedin in a rematch against the Jays. The Phillies will send Cliff Lee to the mound followed by Ethan Martin in relief.
