Abreu Released by Phillies

The Phillies released veteran outfielder Bobby Abreu on Thursday, ending any hope of a comeback with his old team.

The 40-year-old Abreu was informed Wednesday that he would not be on the Phillies’ opening day roster, but the decision to release him was made Thursday.

Abreu hit .244 with two RBIs and a .404 OBP this spring with the Phillies, but struggled defensively in the outfield throughout.

Abreu has not played in the majors since 2012, when he played 100 games between the Dodgers and the Angels. He enjoyed a great stretch in Philadelphia from 1998-2006, where he hit .300 or above six times and hit 195 of his career 287 HRs.
