Adams to Return from DL, Torre Tells Amaro Call was Wrong

Phillies reliever Mike Adams told reporters on Monday that he will come off the disabled list on Tuesday. The 35-year old righty has yet to appear in a game with the Phillies after undergoing shoulder surgery this past off-season.

Adams made a brief minor league rehab, stopping for three appearances in Clearwater, and one in Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Between the two stops, he pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out six. There has been no mention of the corresponding move, although some reports indicate the move may depend on the status of A.J. Burnett.

As expanded instant replay continues through its early sages of life in the MLB, it is still causing its bit of controversy. According to a tweet from Ryan Lawrence of The Daily News, Joe Torre called Ruben Amaro Jr. and told him that Tony Gwynn should have been ruled safe on the play at the plate in the sixth inning of Sunday’s game because he had no open lane to the plate.

The play in question came after Gwynn tried to score from first after Chase Utley smacked a ball into the left-field corner. Gwynn was thrown out at home plate, but Ryne Sandberg came out to question whether catcher Jeff Mathis was in violation of the Collision Rule, which states that catchers cannot block the plate before they are in possession of the ball. After review, the umpires upheld the original ruling, and later on Torre spoke with Amaro to let him know he thought that was the incorrect call.
