Phillies Lose Third Straight to Marlins, 4-3

Jerome Williams was on the mound today for the Phillies, looking to get a win in his fifth start.  Williams pitched the first inning without giving up a hit before allowing a double to lead off batter Marcell Ozuna in the second inning.  Ichiro Suzuki was able to log a single on the inning, scoring Ozuna from second and giving Miami an early lead, 1-0.

The third inning didn’t go well for the Phillies, as they went 1-2-3 on a fly out, ground out, and strikeout to finish off the bottom of the order against Tom Koehler.  Jerome Williams was able to get through the bottom of the inning, only giving up one hit to Dee Gordon.

The fourth inning the Phillies offense lit up and strung two hits together for Chase Utley, who hit his third home run for the year, and lift the score to 3-1 and put the Phillies on top.  Ryan Howard was able to follow up Chase with a walk, and Grady Sizemore hit a single to put Ryan on second base.  Carlos Ruiz worked another walk to load the bases for the hot Freddie Galvis.  Freddie went down swinging and brought up Jerome Williams in the 9th spot.  The first pitch was a ball that went wild, and while Ryan Howard charged home plate, Tom Koehler was able to make a close tag that was upheld after a challenge by Ryne Sandberg.

Jerome went to pitch into the fifth inning and left two runs score and tie the game up at 3-3.  Jerome went 5.0 innings giving up seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks, while allowing three earned runs.

Jeanmar Gomez and Luis Garcia both pitched shutout innings only allowing three hits between the two of them, paving the way for Ken Giles to close the game and come in for the eighth and ninth innings.  After allowing two singles in a row with two outs in the eighth inning, Giles was able to strikeout Martin Prado and end the inning, keeping the score tied at 3-3.

After what looked like a home run and a sure lead by Cody Asche, his triple went for nought as Carlos Ruiz grounded out to second baseman, Dee Gordon, stranding Asche where he stood on third base.

After Giles walked Giancarlo Stanton to start off the ninth inning, Marcell Ozuna gave the final pitch of the game a ride to center field, which scored Stanton on a play judged by the centimeters after a review by the umpires.  The play was upheld and the score stood at 4-3, with Miami taking the walk off win to the next game, tomorrow at 4:10 EST.
