Report: Giants making “strong push” for Hamels

According to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the San Francisco Giants are making a strong push for Cole Hamels despite reports that the Dodgers and Rangers were the front-runners to land the left-hander.

San Francisco currently sits just a half game behind the Dodgers in the National League West. Acquiring Hamels would certainly bolster their rotation—which already features World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner, Matt Cain, Jake Peavy, and Chris Heston, who threw a no-hitter earlier this season—and keep the Dodgers from improving theirs.

The Giants have the money to cover Hamels’ contract, but seem to lack the prospects the Phillies desire. They have shown interest in Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez

, but Rosenthal reported yesterday that the Giants likely don’t have the prospects needed to even land a player of Gomez’s caliber.

For the Phillies, competition from the Giants can only be a good thing as it will inevitably force the Dodgers, and even the Rangers, to “up the ante” if they hope to add Hamels.
