Reports of a freak injury to Clearwater pitcher Matt Imhof began coming out over the weekend thanks to Florida-based baseball blogger, and friend of the site, Baseball Betsy.
Details stated that the 22-year-old was taking part in a stretching routine following a recent game and that a rubber band he was using snapped, causing part of the equipment to strike Imhof in his right eye.
An ESPN.com report on Monday stated that >Imhof has already undergone one surgery and will require more procedures to repair the damage. The injury is described as career threatening.
In two years since he was the Phillies’ second round draft choice out of Cal Poly, the young lefty posted a 13-10 record with a 3.69 ERA in 43 minor league outings at four levels. Imhof began this season in the Class A Advanced Threshers’ starting rotation, but was recently moved to the bullpen to work on improving his efforts.
Phillies personnel did not reply to a request for comment on if the type of equipment that caused the harm would remain in use by the team.
