Phillies claim David Rollins, DFA Cody Asche

The Phillies had to make a contract decision regarding Cody Asche by 8 p.m.

They did, designating Asche for assignment to make room for left-handed pitcher David Rollins. The Phillies claimed Rollins, 26, off waivers from the Rangers on Friday.

Rollins was drafted in 2011 by Toronto. In 2012, he was traded to the Astros in a deal that involved Ben Francisco and J.A. Happ. He was selected by Seattle in the 2014 Rule 5 Draft, then suspended in 2015 for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

Then Seattle designated him for assignment. On waivers, the Cubs claimed him. Then the Cubs designated him for assignment. On waivers, the Rangers claimed him. That was about a week ago. Now he’s a Phillie.

Last season, for Seattle, Rollins wemt 1-0 with a 7.71 ERA in 11 games. He struck out six and walked seven. For triple-A Tacoma the lefty went 5-0 with a 3.77 ERA in 37 games, striking out 32 and walking six.

As for Asche, a team can claim him. He hit .213/.284/.350 in 218 plate appearances last season. For his career he’s a .240/.298/.385 hitter with 31 career home runs.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
