Phillies claim Richie Shaffer off waivers

Though Andres Blanco reportedly signed a one-year deal to stay in Philadelphia, the Phillies aren’t done finding infielders. They have claimed infielder Richie Shaffer off waivers from Seattle.

Shaffer, 25 and from Flemington, N.J.,  hit .250/.315/.438 in 54 plate appearances last year for Tampa Bay. In triple-A Durham he went .227/.329/.367 with 38 extra-base hits in 496 plate appearances.

The right-handed hitter has played third base, first base and the corner outfield positions.

DE-KLEIN: The Phillies also announced Wednesday that pitcher Phil Klein has been released, as he will pursue an opportunity to play in Asia. That opens up room on the 40-man roster for Andres Blanco.

UPDATE: Apparently not. The Phils just designated left-handed pitcher David Rollins for assignment to make room for Blanco.
