Phillies claim Richie Shaffer off waivers

Though Andres Blanco reportedly signed a one-year deal to stay in Philadelphia, the Phillies aren’t done finding infielders. They have claimed infielder Richie Shaffer

off waivers from Seattle.

Shaffer, 25 and from Flemington, N.J.,  hit .250/.315/.438 in 54 plate appearances last year for Tampa Bay. In triple-A Durham he went .227/.329/.367 with 38 extra-base hits in 496 plate appearances.

The right-handed hitter has played third base, first base and the corner outfield positions.

DE-KLEIN: The Phillies also announced Wednesday that pitcher Phil Klein has been released, as he will pursue an opportunity to play in Asia. That opens up room on the 40-man roster for Andres Blanco.

UPDATE: Apparently not. The Phils just designated left-handed pitcher David Rollins for assignment to make room for Blanco.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
