10 Phillies heading to World Baseball Classic; also, Whoopies!

Good morning! Some fun news today; let’s get on it!

WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC: Ten players in the Phillies organization will play in the World Baseball Classic, opening March 6.

The players:

  • Odubel Herrera (Venezuela)
  • Freddy Galvis (Venezuela)
  • Edubray Ramos (Venezuela)
  • Jeanmar Gomez (Venezuela)
  • Jorge Alfaro (Colombia)
  • Hector Neris (Dominican Republic)
  • Pat Neshek (United States)
  • Nick Pivetta (Canada)
  • Nick Fanti (Italy)
  • Kenny Koplove (Israel)

Great to see the Phils represented for a couple nations, and really great to see the group playing for Venezuela, which is among the favorites to win. In case you’re wondering, oddsshark.com has the USA as slight favorites over the Dominican Republic. Japan and Venezuela are next.

YUMMY IDEA: So I love whoopie pies. They’re really popular up in Maine. However, they may have originated in Pennsylvania. To celebrate that, the R-Phils will become the Reading Whoopies for one morning (yes, morning) only in 2017.

On Aug. 7, the Fightin’ Phils will become the Whoopies, wearing a brown jersey and hat depicting a running “joyful” whoopie pie logo. That game is the team’s annual morning game, a 9:35 a.m. first pitch. As part of the promotion, the Ph- err, Whoopies will hand out free whoopie pies to the first 2,000 adults. And all fans that show up before 8 a.m. get a free coffee and hot dog. Also, the game will feature a Kegs and Eggs Beer Tasting Festival.

I think I’ve heard everything I needed to hear. I’m absolutely going to this game.

The opponent will take part in the fun, too. The Whoopies are playing Akron RubberDucks … no, wait … they’re always the RubberDucks.

Minor league baseball, man.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
