PHILLIES LOSE: The Yankees have been a good spring training team. They beat the Phillies Wednesday, 7-3. Vince Velasquez went 5.2 innings, struck out seven, walked two and gave up four earned runs. Joely Rodriguez and Joaquin Benoit continued to struggle. Cesar Hernandez added two hits in the loss.
USA WINS: The United States won the World Baseball Classic with an 8-0 win over Puerto Rico on Wednesday. The pitching was outstanding, highlighted by USA starter Marcus Stroman, who pitched a one-hitter in six innings. Phillie Pat Neshek, a star of the Classic, pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
ALTHERR’S SWING: Matt Gelb talked to Aaron Altherr about his changed swing, which has him hitting well this spring. There’s pressure on Altherr to prove himself a major leaguer this year, and the way he’s looking right now, he’s facing that pressure head on.
KLENTAK TALKS: Good get by John Stolnis, whose podcast The Felske Files hits 100 with an interview with general manager Matt Klentak. He asked Klentak about prospect timetables, what success means in 2017, and if the Phils might spend big for that 2018-19 free agent class.
