The Phillies have placed pitcher Aaron Nola on the 10-day disabled list with a lower back strain.
The move is retroactive to April 21 (Nola’s last start), so if he’s only on for 10 days, he misses just one start (Wednesday vs. Miami). His next scheduled start would be May 1 at Chicago.
OPINION: (grabs paper bag). That said, we don’t know if this is a one-time minor injury or part of something bigger. We’ll just have to see.
Until then, someone will need to pitch. Either that person takes Nola’s spot Wednesday, or the Phils could just move everyone up a day, but they’d still need a starter April 30 at Los Angeles. Internally, Mark Leiter Jr. may be able to handle a spot start in a bullpen game (that’s asking a lot before a trip from LA to Chicago), or the Phils could just call Ben Lively back up to make his first career start (not to waste someone else’s option).
If this is a bigger problem (and we hope not), maybe it’s time for Nick Pivetta, who’s pitching extremely well in Lehigh Valley.
