Down goes Velasquez, up comes Pinto

And it continues.

The Phillies have placed starter Vince Velasquez on the 10-day disabled list with a right elbow flexor strain.

Now calling Ricardo Pinto, starting pitching prospect turned reliever, to take his place on the 25-man roster.

Velasquez, who was hurt in Tuesday’s loss to Miami, is 2-5 with a 5.58 ERA this year. He has 53 strikeouts and 21 walks. He hasn’t been very encouraging.

Pinto, 23, is 3-3 with a 5.53 ERA, 27 strikeouts and 17 walks this season for Lehigh Valley. Struggling as a starter, he was converted to the bullpen and in two games there has a 0.00 ERA with two strikeouts and a walk. Pinto can get his fastball into the mid-to-upper 90s.
