It’s not everyday you see the beat writer of a professional sports team express any sort of emotion when breaking the news of a promotion. But when you’re covering a 26-51 squad going nowhere fast, you can’t help to get a little excited.
Nick Williams is on his way to NY. Promoted!!
— Jim Salisbury (@JSalisburyCSN) June 30, 2017
As you can see, Jim Salisbury reported that after a year and a half in Triple-A, amassing a total of 775 at-bats, Nick Williams has been called up by the Phillies. In the corresponding move, Howie Kendrick was placed on the disabled list with a nagging hamstring injury.
Williams, who came over in a package for Cole Hamels in July of 2015, hit .280/.328/.511 with 15 home runs and 44 RBI in Lehigh Valley this year. Williams has been scrutinized for his lack of plate discipline, but over his last six games, the outfielder has posted six walks.
MLB.com Phillies beat writer Todd Zolecki was the ‘Debbie Downer’ of the news.
Regarding Nick Williams’ promotion: might only be a few days. Not necessarily a long term thing.

It’s unclear if Williams will be in tonight’s starting lineup against Jacob deGrom, but he’s on his way to New York to put on a Phillies uniform. If Williams plays well in the opportunities given to him, he could extend his stay, most likely at the expense of Cameron Perkins.
