Phillies to try out Drew Hutchison, scout Tim Lincecum

The Phillies have signed right-handed pitcher Drew Hutchison to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Hutchison, 27, made his major-league debut way back in 2012 with Toronto, putting up a 4.60 ERA with a 6.48 K/9 and 1.62 BB/9. He spent 2014 and ’15 in the Jays rotation, putting up unspectacular numbers despite decent peripherals.

Most recently Hutchison was pitching in triple-A Indianapolis, in the Pirates system. In 2017 for Indianapolis he started 26 games, throwing 159.1 innings, and putting up a 3.56 ERA (4.13 FIP) with a 7 K/9 and 3.22 BB/9. He carries a fastball hitting 92-93, a similar two-seamer, changeup and slider.

Hutchison will probably get a chance to compete for a roster spot, but he’s pretty much in the boat with Jake Thompson, Ben Lively and Zach Eflin. That he’s older than those guys and doesn’t have a 40-man roster spot makes him an outsider to break camp.

Meanwhile: In probably more interesting news, the Phillies are scouting Tim Lincecum today. Yes, that Tim Lincecum. The 33-year-old and two-time Cy Young winner last pitched in 2016 with the Angels (38.1 IP, 9.16 ERA). Lincecum has put on some muscle this year and is throwing for several teams today, with the Phils included among the group.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
