Spring news: Phillies to wear powder blues in 2018

Pitchers and catchers haven’t officially reported to spring training in Clearwater, but there has already been plenty of action down in Florida.

On Tuesday, the Phillies announced they will wear throwback powder blue uniforms on select Thursday nights this season. The team wore the blues from 1973 to 1988.

But that isn’t all. In case you forgot, 2018 is the 10-year anniversary of the 2008 world championship, so the Phils will honor that team on Aug. 5. They’ll also mark the 25-year anniversary of the 1993 National League champion squad on June 10.

Also, Monday we found out that Eric Fryer, a catcher the Phils signed to a minor league contract with an invitation to Clearwater, will not report but instead retire. In his stead, the Phils are inviting Nick Rickles to camp. Rickles caught last year in Reading and Lehigh Valley.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
