Phillies acquire Jose Bautista from Mets

After claiming New York Mets third baseman/outfielder Jose Bautista on revocable waivers, the Philadelphia Phillies have completed a trade that will allow them to acquire the six-time All-Star, per Joel Sherman of The New York Post. Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia tweets that the Phillies will traAll Postsde a player to be named later or cash to the Mets for Bautista, who they plan to use as a pinch-hitter.

The Phillies will be the third Naitonal League East team to employ the 37-year-old in 2018. Known for his 10-and-a-half season tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays, Bautista began the season with the Atlanta Braves, but hit just .143 in 12 games before being released. However, despite the fact that he’s hitting just .204 with the Mets, he’s provided value. In 245 at-bats in New York, Bautista has nine home runs, 37 RBIs and 51 walks.

The Phillies announced Tuesday that they have designated Mark Leiter Jr. for assignment to make place for Bautista on the 40-man roster.
