Larry Shenk’s Phillies Minor League Report: 5/23/19

“The Baron” is the former Philadelphia Phillies head of community relations, a role in which he served the organization for more than four decades. Larry is also a 2018 inductee to the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame.

Lehigh Valley, International League North Division

**IronPigs (23–19) won second straight over the first-place Syracuse Mets, 6–4, on a 2-run eighth inning. Win moved Lehigh Valley into first place, .003 ahead of Syracuse. 3B Mitch Walding doubled in the first run in the eighth; 1B Matt McBride’s ground out plated the second; McBride, 2–4, 3 RBI; fourth consecutive 2-hit game, 12 RBI in those 4 games. C Deivy Grullon, 2–4, 2 runs, stolen base; leads club, .349 . . . ND: Tom Eshelman, 5–3–3–3–1–6, 2 HR. WP: JD Hammer (1–0), AAA debut, 2–0–0–0–0–3. SV: Yacksel Rios (4) . . . Drew Anderson (0–3), 7:05 tonight vs. Syracuse, series finale.

Reading, Eastern League East Division

**Fightin Phils (23–17) coasted to a 9–1 win over the Flying Squirrels in Richmond. Reading had 12 hits and 10 walks, 7–19 with runners in scoring position. Fightins are in third place, 1.5 games out of first place . . . CF Adam Haseley, 3–5, 2 RBI. 2B Luke Williams, 2–4, 3 runs, RBI, double, 2 walks. RF Mickey Moniak, 1–4, 2 runs, 2 RBI, 2 walks. LF Cornelius Randolph, 3–5, run, double . . . WP: David Parkinson (4–2), 6–5–1–1–3–9, picked off runner at 1B; all 4 wins have come on the road. Parkinson, Aaron Brown (1), Connor Brogdon (3) and Jonathan Hennigan (1) combined for 14 strikeouts . . . Bailey Falter (3–2), 6:35 tonight in Richmond, series finale.

Clearwater, Florida State League North Division

**Threshers (22–24) had an ugly walk-off loss in 10 innings in Daytona, 8–7. (In the minor leagues, each team starts an extra inning with a courtesy runner on second base). 2B Dan Brito’s sacrifice fly gave Clearwater a 7–6 lead in the 10th. In the bottom of the same inning, Luis Cedeno walked 2 to load the bases, forced in a run with a hit batter and walked in the winning run . . . CF Simon Muzziotti, 2–5, 2 runs, RBI. 2B Nick Maton, 2–4, 2 runs, RBI, walk, stolen base. SS Dalton Guthrie, 2–5, 2 runs, double, stolen base. 1B Madison Stokes 11-game hitting streak ended . . . ND: Andrew Brown, 5–7–3–3–1–4, HR. LP: Cedeno (0–1), 1.1–2–2–1–6–0 . . . 6:30 tonight in Jupiter against the Hammerheads, first of a 4-game series.

Lakewood, South Atlantic League North Division

**BlueClaws (15–30) suffered their third walk-off loss in their last 4 days and fifth of the season, this time 2–1 in Delmarva. A walk started the ninth inning and eventually scored on a bases-loaded, 2-out single. Lakewood was held to singles by 5 different players. The BlueClaws drew 7 walks but left 11 runners on base . . . ND: Francisco Morales, 4–2–1–0–1–10. LP: Victor Santos (2–4). Morales, Robinson Martinez (2), and Santos (5) combined to strike out 17 Shorebirds, most by the BlueClaws this year. . . . Kevin Gowdy (0–1), 7:05 tonight in Delmarva.
