Minor League Mash-Up: Grullon continues strong season at Triple-A

Deivy Grullon is having a strong season. (Cheryl Pursell)

Another week of Minor League Baseball is in the books and the Phillies farm had another eventful stretch, so let’s dig in.

Records

  • Lehigh Valley IronPigs: 25-21
  • Reading Fightin’ Phils: 27-18
  • Clearwater Threshers: 26-24
  • Lakewood Blue Claws: 17-32

Notable Performances

  • Deivy Grullon went 2-5 with two RBIs for Lehigh Valley on Tuesday. Grullon then went 2-4 with a double and two runs scored on Wednesday. Thursday, all Grullon did was post three hits in four at-bats. He continued this stellar week with a 3-4 performance on Saturday with a pair of doubles, a home run and four RBIs. Just for good measure, he homered again on Sunday.
  • Mickey Moniak went 2-5 with an RBI for Reading on Tuesday. He then went 1-4 with two runs scored, two walks and two RBIs on Wednesday. Moniak went 2-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a double on Thursday. Moniak finished off his week with a 2-4 game on Sunday.
  • Adam Haseley went 3-5 with two RBIs on Wednesday for Reading.
  • David Parkinson added a nice outing for Reading in that Wednesday night tilt, going six innings and allowing one run on five hits and three walks. He struck out nine.
  • Ramon Rosso had another stellar outing this week for Reading. He went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and one walk. He struck out four.
  • Adonis Medina had an encouraging outing this week for Reading as well. On Sunday, he went five innings, allowing a run on five hits and two walks. He struck out four.
  • Alec Bohm launched another home run for Clearwater on Monday. Bohm then went 2-4 on Tuesday. The top prospect went 2-4 again on Friday, with a double.
  • Jhailyn Ortiz went 2-3 with a double, a home run and a RBI on Monday. Ortiz then went 2-4 in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Monday. He added a two-run home run on Saturday. To finish the week, he went 2-5 with a pair of RBIs on Sunday.
  • Matt Vierling went 2-3 with a triple in Game 2 for Clearwater on Monday. Vierling went 2-5 with an RBI on Thursday.
  •  Colton Eastman had a great outing for Clearwater on Sunday. Eastman went seven scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and two walks. He had 11 strike outs.
  • Francisco Morales was throwing gas for Lakewood on Wednesday. In only four innings, he struck out 10. He allowed one uneanred run on two hits and a walk. His pitch count was relativity low at 68, which isn’t bad for having 10 strikeouts.
  • Kyle Glogoski had a similar outing later in the week. He went five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits. He struck out 11 on 66 pitches.

Gowdy’s Strange Outing

Kevin Gowdy had one of the most unsightly lines you’ll ever see on Thursday: 0 IP, four earned runs, six walks and zero hits Lakewood would lose the game 14-0 as Gowdy walked in three runs with the bases loaded.

J.D. Hammer’s Crazy Week

Phillies bullpen pitcher J.D. Hammer went from Double-A to the majors in one week. Hammer was called up to Triple-A early in the week and appeared in one game, going two clean innings, while striking out three. On Saturday, he was called up to the majors and made his debut on Sunday. Hammer went one inning, allowing no runs, hits or walks. He struck out one batter. He faced Christian Yelich, Ryan Braun, and Mike Moustakas – not a bad major league debut at all.

Season Stats

  • Phillies top prospect Alec Bohm is slashing .333/.388/.539 with a .927 OPS in 46 games. He has six home runs, 17 doubles, 29 RBIs and four stolen bases.
  • Adonis Medina has a 4.26 ERA after eight starts. His biggest problem is hits, as he’s allowed 39 hits in 38 innings. When you combine that with 15 walks, bad things are bound to happen.
  • Adam Haseley is slashing .255/.349/.428 with 21 walks in 39 games. He has six home runs and seven doubles with 25 runs scored.
  • Luis Garcia is batting just .201 this season. He’s hit .214 in May after hitting .190 in April.
  • JoJo Romero got demoted to Reading this past week. Things didn’t improve in his return to Double-A, as he got lit up in his first start there. For the season, he has a 10.02 ERA, with a 2.26 WHIP and an opponent’s batting average of .353. Not sure what happened here.
  • Francisco Morales has an ERA of 4.80, but that’s not the main story. He’s struck out 50 batters in 30 innings. That puts him on pace for nearly 15 strikeouts per nine innings. If he continues to struggle over lengthy outings, a move to the bullpen may do him and the Phillies well. Keep in mind he’s only 19 years old.
  • Mickey Moniak has his average up to .259 after hitting .299 in his last 23 games. He still needs to work on plate discipline, as he’s averaging one walk per five strikeouts.
  • Add Clearwater outfielder Simon Mizziotti to the injured list. He was hitting .306 before being sidelined.
  • Rafael Marchan is now hitting .313 for the season. His power is yet to come around, but he has great plate discipline with only seven strikeouts in 19 games.
  • Nick Maton is hitting .289 with three home runs and six doubles for Clearwater.
  • David Parkinson is starting to come around. He has a 3.35 ERA in seven starts for Reading. He’s allowed just one home run in 37.2 innings of work, which is not an easy feat at First Engery Stadium.
  • Kyle Dohy is getting comfortable in Lehigh Valley. In his last three outings, he’s only allowed one run to lower his ERA to 10.22 in Triple-A. Strikeouts are up, as he’s got 20 in 12.1 innings. His biggest problem is control – he’s walked 14 in that amount of time as well.
  • Deivy Grullon is hitting .356 with a 1.019 OPS in Triple-A. He has nine home runs and 37 RBIs in 38 games. A lot of people would like to see him as the back-up catcher on the Phillies, but with a star like J.T. Realmuto as the starting catcher, he wouldn’t see much playing time. For now, he will continue to get at-bats and rake in Triple-A until he is needed in Philadelphia.
