Larry Shenk’s Phillies Minor League Report: 5/24/19

Phillies Nation is honored to have Larry Shenk among the ranks of our regular contributors.

“The Baron” is the former Philadelphia Phillies head of community relations, a role in which he served the organization for more than four decades. Larry is also a 2018 inductee to the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame.

Lehigh Valley, International League North Division

**IronPigs (24–19) scored 3 times in the ninth for a come-from-behind walk-off win, 6–5, over the Syracuse Mets enabling LV to sweep the 3-game series and grab hold of first place again . . . CF Grenny Cumana, at 5-foot-5 the smallest player on the field, got the biggest hit, a game-winning, 2-run double. 1B Matt McBride’s second hit of the game drove in the first ninth-inning run. C Deivy Grullon, 3–4, walk; hitting .361. Other 2-hit games, in addition to Cumana and McBride, SS Malquin Canelo, RF Nick Williams (1 RBI) and LF Lane Adams . . . With the scheduled starter, Drew Anderson, getting called up to the majors, reliever Alexis Rivero was the emergency starter for the second time, 3–3–1–1–1–3. WP: Kyle Dohy (1–1) . . . Tyler Viza (0–3), 7:05 tonight vs. Buffalo Bisons.

Reading, Eastern League Eastern Division

**Fightin Phils (24–17) won their second straight in Richmond, 6–1, to take the series, 2–1; pitching staff allowed just 2 runs in the pair of wins. Reading is in third place, 1.5 games out of first. First time the Fightins are 7 games over .500 this season . . . WP: Bailey Falter (4–2), 6–3–0–0–2–8; also a force on offense, 2–3, run . . . RF Mickey Moniak, 2–4, walk, 2 runs, 2 RBI, stolen base (10); fifth multi-hit game in the last 7 games; hitting .375 in last 10. 3B Austin Listi, 1–3, run, double, RBI . . . Mauricio Llovera (2–0), 7 tonight against the Western Division first-place Senators in Harrisburg.

Clearwater, Florida State League North Division

**Threshers (23–24) opened a 4-game series against the Hammerheads in Jupiter with a 4–1 win. 5 of their 11 hits were doubles. Clearwater is in third place, 4 games out of first . . . 2B Dan Brito, 2–3, walk, run, 2 RBI, double. CF Matt Vierling, 2–5, RBI, stolen base (11). C Rodolfo Duran, 2–4. 1B Madison Stokes, 2–5. 3B Alec Bohm, 1–5, run, RBI, double (16 overall) . . . WP: Julian Garcia (3–3), 7–4–1–1–0–5, HR; retired 12 consecutive batters at one point; longest outing on the staff this season. SV: Tyler Carr

(1), 2–1–0–0–0–1 . . . Ethan Evanko (1–0, 3–0 overall), 10:30 this morning in Jupiter. Will Stewart (1–4), who went to the Marlins in the Realmuto deal, will start for Jupiter.

Lakewood, South Atlantic League North Division

**BlueClaws (15–31) after a 2–1 walk-off loss at Delmarva on Wednesday night, got blown out by the Shorebirds, 14–0. The 14 runs came on 8 hits and 11 walks. Club record for most walks in a game is 12 . . . LP: Kevin Gowdy (0–2), did not retire a batter as he gave up 4 runs on 6 walks . . . Lakewood was held to 2 singles, one each for 1B Jake Holmes and 2B Jonathan Guzman . . . 4-game series and 9-game road trip ends at 7:05 tonight, Ethan Lindow (1–1).
