Chris Young won’t return as Phillies pitching coach in 2020

The Philadelphia Phillies will have their third pitching coach in as many years in 2020.

Per MLB.com‘s Todd Zolecki, the Phillies will not retain Young as their pitching coach for another season. Zolecki adds that it’s not known if Young will be reassigned elsewhere within the organization.

The Phillies parted ways with pitching coach Rick Kranitz last November, promoting Young from assistant pitching coach because they feared losing him. The trio of young starting pitchers that the Phillies banked on developing into consistent starters in 2019 – Nick Pivetta, Zach Eflin and Vince Velasquez – failed to do so, one of the reasons that the team ultimately went 81-81. It’s unclear how much of that had to do with Young, as opposed to the organization overvaluing what they had in that trio.

Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic says that four coaches on Gabe Kapler’s nine coach staff have been informed that they will be back with the team in 2020. It’s unclear at this time which four coaches those are, but we now know Young isn’t one of them, and interim hitting coach Charlie Manuel isn’t expected to return in that role in 2020.

Kapler’s status for 2020 still isn’t clear.
