Phillies All-Decade Team: Shortstop

As the 2010s wind down, PhilliesNation.com will go position-by-position in determining the Philadelphia Phillies All-Decade team.

The Candidates

Franchise icon Jimmy Rollins regularly manned the shortstop position for the Philadelphia Phillies for the first half of the decade. Since Rollins was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead of the 2015 season, the team has pivoted to several different shortstops. Freddy Galvis and Jean Segura have perhaps been the most effective at the position in the latter half of the 2010s, making them, along with Rollins, the candidates for the Phillies All-Decade shortstop.

Rollins was an MVP and World Series champion in the 2000s and continued to be one of the faces of the Phillies into the next decade. Rollins was the starting shortstop for two postseason teams in 2010 and 2011 before adding his third Gold Glove Award in 2012. He rounded out his Phillies career by becoming the franchise’s all-time hits leader in his final season with the team. Rollins was ultimately worth 16.0 fWAR for the team this decade.

Galvis took over as the starting shortstop in 2015. He had previously served in a utility and backup role from 2012-2014. Nominated for a Gold Glove Award in both 2016 and 2017, Galvis was primarily viewed as a defensive shortstop. He posted a 20-home run season in 2016, despite an OPS of only .673. Galvis had an fWAR of 5.9 with the Phillies before being traded to the San Diego Padres in December of 2017.

The Phillies brought Jean Segura to the team in a trade with the Seattle Mariners before this past season. They tried out Scott Kingery at the position in 2018 but decided they needed an upgrade. Segura provided solid production in his first season in Philadelphia. He posted a 2.6 fWAR in 2019.

The Verdict

Jimmy Rollins

Rollins’ longevity compared to the other candidates is what gets him the nod. He was a starter for five seasons this decade and gave the team the most value of any shortstop. Although his best seasons were behind him, Rollins still gave the team some vintage moments in the 2010s.

Best Moment

The best Rollins moment of this decade helped cement his place in franchise history. In June of 2014, Rollins hit a single for the 2,235th hit of his Phillies career. This put him in first place for hits by a Phillie. Rollins was greeted on the field by Mike Schmidt, the previous holder of this record:
