Phillies to sign Zack Wheeler

The Philadelphia Phillies have made their first major move of the 2019 offseason.

According to Mark Craig of The Athletic, the Phillies have signed free-agent righty Zack Wheeler. ESPN’s Jeff Passan is among those to report that the deal will be a five-year/$118 million deal.

In five seasons with the Mets, Wheeler, 29, went 44-38 with a 3.77 ERA and 3.71 FIP. Notably, he went 9-1 with a 1.68 ERA after the 2018 All-Star Break, which has led more than a few baseball observers to think that in the right situation, his consistent front-line potential could be unlocked.

Since the New York Mets issued a qualifying offer to Wheeler, the Phillies will have to relinquish their second highest draft pick in the 2020 MLB Draft and $500,000 of international signing bonus pool money.

This story will be updated as more details come in…

In accord with the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) theory, by the standard established long ago by Charles Manual of “don’t give me what I have already” this move is a step above that. How much? A half decent amount, but we’re still waiting for the fruition of when he was a hot trade commodity as a Giant. But he’s better than what they have already except for Nola. Gotta keep the petal to the metal.

Now Hamels to the Braves? C’mon Cole. I see the attraction (definite chance to win led by Alex Anthopolis) and this might not be fair, or comparable, but Andy Pettitte had a chance to sign with the Red Sox, and said he’d never do anything like that, even though a lot of guys have worn both NY and BOS across the chest. But what a choice! I suppose the Nats would have been worse. It’s just not one I had considered.

By almost any consideration of available pitching and $$$ spent vs. value obtained, and any consideration of our starting 5 before this deal (Nola, Arrieta, dunno3, dunno4 and Eflin), it is very hard to argue AGAINST signing Zack Wheeler. In terms of rotation, we now have a 1 and 2, vs. what we had previously — which was 1 and done. If Wheeler improves the Phillies by a half-dozen games over what the VV-Pivetta-Eflin combo could give us — that alone makes us 87-75, and a wildcard contender.

As to Hamels. Neither Cole nor Phillies fans should get lost in nostalgia. Yankees vs. Red Sox and what Pettitte did are one thing: a storied rivalry, one of the most dramatic in sports history, going back a full century. Phillies vs. Braves or any other franchise (except, maybe, the Phila. Athletics if we could find them) … not comparable. Considering his age, where he is in his career, and maybe one more chance at a ring, Hamels got a great deal for himself, and one that the Phillies wouldn’t have –and shouldn’t have — offered. Good for Cole; good “moving on” decision by the Phillies organization.
