How much would key Phillies make under new MLB proposal?

A new proposal by the Major League Baseball owners would significantly cut the salaries of players league-wide in 2020, especially those making the most money. With several players making at least $20 million and more making at least $10 million, the Philadelphia Phillies have quite a few players that would be significantly affected if the proposal was implemented.

According to Jeff Passan and Jesse Rogers of ESPN, the owners proposed a tiered system where players making near the minimum would make a high percentage of their salary, and players making the most money would be giving up a higher percentage of their salary — all of it being prorated to 82 games.

Passan also explained the tiers in a series of tweets, and applied the stipulations of the proposal to the salary of Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout to show how it would work.

Now knowing the terms of this proposal and how it would impact players’ earnings for this season, let’s take a look at how much estimated money key Phillies players would make based on their original 2020 salaries, according to Spotrac.

Bryce Harper: $4,723,255

Harper, who signed a 13-year, $330 million contract with the Phillies before last season, was set to make $27,538,462 this season. Because he was to make over $20 million, Harper would make the same as Trout for the first five tiers. He would then make an additional $763,153 for the sixth tier, earning him a grand total of $4,723,255 over 82 games.

Zack Wheeler: $4,111,954

Wheeler signed a five-year, $118 million contract with the Phillies this past offseason. The starting pitcher was set to get $21.5 million of that in 2020, his first season as a Phillie. Under the proposal, he would receive $151,852 in the sixth tier, and $4,111,954 across the 82 games.

Jake Arrieta: $3,960,102

The 34-year-old pitcher is in the third and final season of a $75 million contract. Arrieta was scheduled to earn $20 million this season. This would net him the full amount of the first five tiers in an 82-game season, totaling $3,960,102.

Andrew McCutchen: $3,504,546

Veteran outfielder Andrew McCutchen was set to make $17 million in his second season with the Phillies. His new salary under the proposal would get the former MVP the same as the previous three players for the first four tiers. He would then get 1,062,963 for the fifth tier. McCutchen would earn $3,504,546 over 82 games.

Didi Gregorius: $3,048,990

The former New York Yankees shortstop signed a one-year deal with the Phillies for $14 million. Under the proposal, Gregorius would get the full earnings of the first four tiers, and make $607,407 for the additional $4 million above $10 million. His 82-game total would be $3,048,990.

J.T. Realmuto: $2,441,583

Realmuto, who won the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards for National League catchers last season, was set to receive $10 million in his second season in Philadelphia. This would give the 29-year-old the full earnings of the first four tiers, $2,441,583 over 82 games.

Aaron Nola :$2,137,879

The ace of the Phillies pitching staff was supposed to make $8.5 million this season. The new proposal would earn him the full amount of the first three salary tiers. He would make an additional $708,642. Nola’s salary over a full 82 games would be $2,137,879.

Rhys Hoskins: $271,935

Hoskins has not reached arbitration yet, which means he was scheduled to earn much less than the rest of the players on this list. His 2020 salary was set for $605,000. He would earn 90 percent his first $563,500, prorated to 82 games. He would then earn 72.5 percent of the leftover $41,500, also prorated to 82 games. Hoskins would earn $271,935 over 82 games in this proposal.
