Phillies Nation Perfect Season: Cole Hamels throws immaculate inning, earns 100th career win

Every day until Opening Day arrives, Phillies Nation will take a daily look back at a regular season victory from that particular day in history that you can watch in full in lieu of live Phillies baseball. Think of it is as your daily Phillies watch recommendation.

May 17, 2014- Phillies 12, Reds 1

This game did not start as Cole Hamels expected. After a rough first inning where Hamels allowed the Cincinnati Reds to take a 1-0 lead, whether or not he could reach his 100th win was put into question.

But Hamels got in his grove and locked down the Reds’ offense soon after. He proved his dominance by controlling every at-bat with a consistently aggressive pitching style. Hamels racked up ten strikes outs over the seven innings he pitched. In the third inning, he became the fifth Phillie in franchise history to throw an immaculate inning:

This game was also memorable because it marked the end of an offensive slump for the Phillies. The team rallied around Hamels in the fourth inning. They batted around and scored six thanks to some aggressive base running by Ryan Howard and a two-run homer by Domonic Brown. Brown was on fire that night; he also hit a three-run double in the bottom of the seventh to increase the lead to 10-1.

To top off the evening, Cesar Hernandez subbed in and hit his first career home run:

With the Reds unable to score at the top of the ninth, Hamels and the Phillies earned their 18th victory of the season. With the 12-1 win, Hamels became the seventh pitcher in Phillies history to reach the 100-win benchmark.
