Phillies select outfielder Baron Radcliff with final pick

With their final pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, the Philadelphia Phillies selected outfielder Baron Radcliff from Georgia Tech.

Radcliff appears to be a boom-or-bust type hitter, perhaps not that dissimilar from Corenelius Randolph, expect he wasn’t a first-round pick. Radcliff hit 19 home runs and drove in 73 runs in 330 at-bats in his collegiate career. That said, he struck out 135 times in 112 career college games, so there’s work to be done.

Radcliff was announced as an outfielder. He played right field and some first base during his college career. It’s possible that by the time he reaches the major-league level, the DH is universal and could be an option for Radcliff as well.

Radcliff, 21, was the final of four picks that Matt Klentak and the Phillies had in the 2020 MLB Draft. The team selected RHP Mick Abel in the first round. They didn’t have a second-round selection after signing Zack Wheeler this past offseason, but came back by selecting University of Arkansas shortstop Casey Martin in the third round. Carson Ragsdale, a righty from USF, was selected with the team’s fourth-round pick.

Phillies scouting director Brian Barber, who just completed his first draft in the organization, is expected to speak to the media Friday at noon.
