Phillies announce no new positive COVID-19 tests

The Philadelphia Phillies issued a small dose of good news Friday, announcing that in their latest round of COVID-19 testing, which took place Thursday, there were no new positive tests.

Still, the team adds that “activity at Citizens Bank Park remains suspended until further notice.” Thursday, the Phillies announced that a member of the coaching staff and a member of the home clubhouse staff had tested positive for COVID-19.

The Miami Marlins, who played a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park last weekend, now have had 18 of the 30 players on their roster test positive for Coronavirus.

Mark Saxson of The Athletic reported Friday morning that two pitchers on the St. Louis Cardinals tested positive for COVID-19, which will delay the team’s home opener this evening, which had been scheduled to be played against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Phillies haven’t played since losing to the Marlins last Sunday, with four games against the New York Yankees this week and three games against the Toronto Blue Jays this weekend all being postponed. It’s unclear if those games will be rescheduled. As Matt Gelb of The Athletic noted, it may not be as simple as the Phillies just returning to action on Monday if there are no further setbacks. Not only have the Phillies not been able to play this week, they haven’t been able to practice or have scheduled bullpen sessions at the stadium.
