Phillies broadcaster Gregg Murphy among NBC Sports Philadelphia layoffs

Over the past few days, NBCUniversal began a round of layoffs that could amount to 10% of its workforce. The layoffs are hitting home as Phillies broadcaster Gregg Murphy has been let go by the network, according to a report from Rob Tornoe of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Murphy will continue to be apart of the broadcast team for the remainder of the 2020 season. He is currently at home awaiting COVID-19 test results after dealing with symptoms. Once he clears NBC’s protocols, he will return to the broadcast.

“First and foremost, I’m disappointed in the news, but it’s a tough time for everyone and I understand why this is happening,” Murphy said. “I am unbelievably grateful for the first time I’ve had at NBC over the last 20 years — nine and a half with the Phillies broadcast team. I very much look forward to coming back and finishing the season as soon as I’m cleared to get back to the ballpark.”

Murphy recently celebrated his 20th anniversary with the company. Before joining the Phillies broadcast team as a field reporter in 2012, Murphy was the host of CN8’s Out of Bounds and the was the lead anchor for the network now known as The Comcast Network. Murphy, who is an alum of St. Joseph’s University, occasionally fills in for Tom McCarthy on play-by-play.

Per Tornoe, a spokesperson for NBC confirmed that 15 staffers from NBC Sports Philadelphia were laid off. Kevin Kinkead of Crossing Broad reports that sources have claimed that “the NBC Sports regional networks are completely doing away with sideline reporters at the end of the current seasons.”

Murphy also hosted the very popular Minute with Murph segment with Phillies players during spring training. Murph and his enthusiasm for covering the team he grew up rooting for will be sorely missed:
