The Philadelphia Phillies announced Tuesday that they have traded RHP Édgar García to the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named later.

To make room for Alec Bohm, García, 23, was designated for assignment this past Thursday. Garcia would have had to clear waivers to stay in the Phillies organization.

The Phillies signed García in 2014 out of the Dominican Republic.

García saw extended time at the major-league level last year as the Phillies battled numerous injuries within the bullpen. One area where the right-hander saw success last year was with his slider. According to FanGraphs, Garcia threw his slider 46.5% of the time, his second most used pitch behind his fastball.

The right-hander will get a second chance with the Rays. The Rays designated INF Daniel Roberston for assignment to make room for García on their roster according to MLB.com’s Juan Toribio. Garcia will have to work on stopping the long ball and reduce walks, two things that hurt him at times with the Phillies last season.

In 37 games with the Phillies, Garcia posted a 2-0 record with a 5.77 ERA, 19.4 K/9 and 1.73 K/BB last season.
