The Phillies and Nationals will not play their regularly scheduled game on Thursday night, according to Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia. Instead, they will sit-out in protest of racial injustice in America.
According to Salisbury, Phillies players met today and discussed whether to play or not. The latter has been decided. The decision was made by Phillies players and not in conjunction with Nationals players, per Salisbury.
John Clark reported that all players were united on the decision. Phillies union rep Rhys Hoskins led the meeting and many players spoke up.
Three Major League Baseball games were not played yesterday. The Milwaukee Brewers were the first to not play their regularly scheduled game. The movement to strike and bring awareness to social justice issues all started with the Milwaukee Bucks choosing to remain in their locker room for a playoff game on Wednesday. Every NBA playoff game was postponed yesterday and more could be coming today. Before this, the WNBA had been at the forefront in sports when it comes to protesting racial inequality and police brutality.
Milwaukee, which is home to both the Brewers and Bucks, is 40 miles from Kenosha, Wisconsin where police shot 29-year-old Jacob Blake eight times in the back last Sunday. He’s now paralyzed from the waist down, according to his father. The shooting has sparked protests both around the country and in the sports world.
